There is a Marshall's at the Metropolitan, although I realize that isn't exactly within comfortable walking distance from uptown.  I went in the store a few weeks back and it seemed to be doing very well there.  I'd love to see a location uptown, perhaps with a smaller footprint.

There will be no store found at the Metropolitan that will open a second location of any caliber in Uptown unless the Midtown location closes. Walking from Uptown to Midtown is perfectly doable. There are plenty of national and international brands who do not have a presence in either that could easily be just as beneficial to Uptown residence.

In terms of Tryon Place and Legacy there is retail that can work and not everything is bought online nor will it ever be.  Look at Apple that is one of the most successful stores on planet earth in terms of sales per square foot and they are still opening stores.  I think there are apparel retailers that can do fine uptown with so large working population. And I will mention it since no one else will, the TJ Maxx corporation and its stores the namesake, Marshalls, Homegoods are THRIVING with little to no online presence.  One uptown somewhere esp. the first 2 would do incredible.  So would one of our Charlotte area based shoe chains like Shoe Show or Rack Room.   Not to mention a Sephora, other cosmetics store even a Victoria Secret would do good uptown. 

I personally like bricks and clicks which if an online order goes awry it is easy to return to a physical store.

As KJHburg said above stores like TJ Maxx have it figured out... Keep the inventory changing so people come back searching for bargains.

 

You can keep on thinking that. Thats evactly what B&N said when Amazon hit the market and look where things are now.  As someone who has close ties to the commercial real estate in CLT and actually worked in a fortune 500 store planning department,  the thinking you two have is not the current thinking of retail planning departments or developers have. It's a risk to plan for commercial retail now  andthats  just a fact. I can't help you if you cant accept that. Maybe a small grocery store would work for this area.

I’m with you. I don’t get this obsession with the Diehl building. It’s the most bland thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve constructed Lego and Lincoln Log structures more impressive. Just because it’s old doesn’t make it cool. Bulldoze it!

^What retailers have to figure out in the new marketplace, is what is the sweet spot... how big should these showroom stores be, what is the right mix of product, and how far apart can they be to provide the best brand equity maximization?

It would be interesting to see how competitive Google could be if they had brick and mortar stores much like Apple.  (Do they sell products in the First Ward Google hub)

I personally left the BIG 4 mobile carriers two years ago when Google announced their beta Project fi program and have been on it with zero issues ever since.  When they announced the Pixel 2 rollout, I simply signed into my account and added the new Pixel phone with the ability to trade in my Nexus 6P that I had for two years right from the Google Play store. It was frightfully easy.

 Google must have did their homework and decided that physical locations weren't for them. 

Would be curious to see the difference in Apple's click vs brick sales figures.

Who in the world walks from uptown to, say the Vue all the way to Metropolitan to shop? If it 20x more developed than it is now, it would be more palatable. But going all the way through no mans land (1st & 2nd Ward)and then either taking the greenway or playing frogger across the busy streets. Yeah. People with uptown salaries aren’t doing that 

You're right, people with Uptown salaries have their own transportation to help them cross 277 since apparently their legs aren't good enough. It may not be ideal, but is is more than doable.

I'd love to see some physical Google Stores myself. I'm like you...bought the last several phones I've owned from Google online and switched to Project Fi about 2 years ago. Love the service and the price.

FYI. They’ve used the approved rezoning form from 2014. Pages 2 and 3 are the only things with updates and those only updates are to include Asanas business in there. This is definitely just a legal formality. Don’t read too much into the rezoning :/
