In certain spots along 277, NCDOT has been digging up the concrete, repouring, and then adding epoxy for a better riding surface. Started a few months ago and every couple of weeks they shift to a new spot. I think they’re only targeting bridges and problem areas.

When  I first moved to Charlotte in 2008, nothing in that photo existed except for the BoA HQ, the Duke Fortress (which hopefully, will be gone in a few years), and the Westin.  South Tryon was desolate, and yet, look at it now.   Hopefully, we’ll all be around to see what it looks like ten years from now.

When the Hornets were first a "thing" in '97, '98 I had a high school friend visit. We grew up in the midwest, he went to Philly for college and stayed there and by his visit he had been a Philly boy for years and that was that. I took him to a Hornets game at the Tyvola building and we parked and he asked whom he should pay to "guard" the car. No one, I said. He looked at me quzzically. We went up(down)town and he saw the parking lots with coin and bill slots and asked and I said it was honor parking. Some pay, maybe some do not pay. "HONOR PARKING!" "You people are nuts" and he said he had to get back to Philly where vandals required extortion payments, all the flat surfaces were tagged and illustrated, even the moving ones, and honor was an excuse for a crime, not for parking.

 

(ALSO) we stopped for gas at a convenience store and there was a pay phone outside. It had a phone book hanging below it. He was astounded that the book was still there. I told him the pages for pizza places were probably missing but the book, yes, still there.

I feel sorry for the people that have to work on the first 6 floors of this building. The back side is only the view of a parking deck. What a depressing place that would be to have your desk.

Maybe it's just me...but I can't shake the masonry between the glass panes in the section that isn't part of the grid. Is it concrete? I feel like it would look better if it was clad itself in some glass covering or something. I just think it looks so "busy," and takes away from the grid portion.

You know what’s crazy, this unfinished building would already be the 6th tallest in Raleigh’s skyline. When it’s completed, it’ll barely be in Charlotte’s top 20 — and even that will be temporary — as it’ll soon be passed by the Ellis, Hotel Intercontinental, and DEC2.

I am really looking forward to see the JW Marriott rise.  Although the Ivey hotel is very nice, the Ritz needs some competition and this JW is what the doctor ordered lol.  That intersection is going to have an incredible vibe and energy once all is said and done.  New Charlotte (Stonewall & Tryon) vs Old Charlotte (Trade & Tryon).
