City Planning for Johns Island

The article below highlights the city of Chas planner's goals in helping Johns Island successfully grow by maintaining its rural feel. He wishes to create regulations that would treat the huge sea island as a unique part of the city, with different rules for development. He even suggests that JI could become an artist colony and/or an organic farming community which would sell its produce at the DT farmers' market. All of these ideas can be fostered and developed with the Planning Workshop the city has scheduled for many JI residents to attend on the week of March 5-9. Other suggested ideas to develop JI include interconnected subdivisions, densely built "gathering place" zones on Maybank Highway, pedestrian and bike paths, and standards for design and appearance such as placing fuel pumps behind gas station buildings to help them look more attractive.

The city supports the last I-526 extension with these developments. Amazingly, the city planner Josh Martin echoes what I've been saying about the highway. It still needs to be built, but enforcing ordinances and providing planning can prevent JI from becoming another typical suburb.
