They went out of business around 1984 or so and their building is now the El Cancun at the corner of Tyvola and South. That El Cancun was the first for that chain.

yes i knew it!! THANK YOU!!! I always told people that was an old arthur's!! I recognize the old yellow and green sign. We were going to try the new one, but man their fish is pricy!

I moved here when last A &P's were fading out.. Also, there was a grocery store over by park rd and selwyn. I can not remember its name for the life of me! I used to shop there with my mom, and it is now a harris teeter, and a shopping strip with Portofino's.

You are referring to the Giant Genie. There were a number of A&Ps here at one time, but they died when the chain died. The two last ones, I believe, were the one on Central in that shopping center near Kilbourne, and over on Wilkenson. There was also one on the Plaza near 36th that later became a Giant Genie for a short while.

Does anyone remember the large purple structure off of Tyvola back in the '80s. It was a club called Plum Crazy, I think.

oh yeah... that's where radio personality, john boy from "john boy and billy" - got caught smoking the devil's lettuce. it was actually big news around these parts @ the time... i think he had to do a bunch of public service annoucements as punishment.

Plum Crazy's was one of my favorite nightclubs ever but that's not even what it started out as. I'm drawing a blank on the name at the moment but it was a live music venue originally. I know someone will chime in with the name though.

Was it PB Scott's? I seem to remember that being their Charlotte location, although I'm not totally sure. Their other location was in Blowing Rock, and it was a frequent haunt of mine as an Appalachian State University student. I remember THAT one quite well! ;)

Yes, it started as PB Scotts. I use to go to the one in Blowing Rock too. What a cool place that was. Is it still around?

I went to the PB Scotts on Tyvola a few times. One of the more memorable concerts I saw there was Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Unfortunately, the Blowing Rock PBS bit the dust long long ago. I'm pretty sure the building was gone by the time I graduated from App in '85.

Not so much a store as a family entertainment venue: Putt-Putt Golf and Games. Anybody miss the orange bumper walls and green astroturf?

Heh the one in Gastonia turned into Adventure Landing, so it's still around and kicking. :)

Anyone ever go to Cavalaris Skating Rink on Morehead? And the underground bowling alley in the same complex? I guess this could be considered a store. Certainly an exclusive one.

I lived at Cavalaris - that was the only place I wanted to go from the time I was 11 until I turned 16 - I think I was there 5 out of 7 days a week. Would love to hear from anyone else who went there.

I liked the White Horse. East Blvd better than Eastway. (Not a store, but still...)

Charlotte once had raucous pornography stores, for those seeking an identity for the Queen City. No longer, everything is prim and proper now as it should be.

In Chapel Hill, there used to be a head shop on Franklin Street called George's Cheep Joint. It was so tiny only about 3 or 4 people could be inside at one time.

I was a teenager living in Charlotte from the mid-to-late 70's. We lived right off of E. Independence on Woodland Dr. It's kind of shocking to see what's happened to that area. These posts have brought back so many memories. Here are a few of the stores and restaurants I have yet to see mentioned:

Cheap Joe's (t-shirts and clothing)

New World Records (a music shop a few doors down from Cheap Joe's)

Top Banana Records

The Sandwich Construction Company

The Book Worm (which was near Mayberry Ice Cream in the plaza near the old Richland store)

The Tree House Nightclub (where the mighty Nantucket would play)

IHOP (the ski chalet-looking place across from the old coliseum)

The Shoney's (this one had a drive-in, so you could order from your car. I remember it being packed after concerts at the coliseum)

The plaza near Eastway Junior High that has a Winn-Dixie and a Big Star. There was also a space-age looking Hardee's near there.

I did the drive using google maps and was shocked at the desolation of the areas. And, of course, I'm also shocked at what's happened to Eastland Mall.

I'll have to try to remember more.

Those were the old witch hat Hardee's. I think the one on Eastway was the last one of that design in Charlotte. Those were really cool looking.

Speaking of area seafood restaurants that are no more...Captain Lyle's was about a mile south of the Buster Boyd bridge and it remains the best (fishcamp) seafood I ever tried. It's been gone forever it seems but I'll never forget the quality food and huge portions!

Captain Lyle's son runs Palmetto Seafood in between York & Clover if you want to experience it all again!! :)

Born in Charlotte in 1981, I remember the following:

  • Annabelle's @ Eastland Mall
  • Celebration Station in Matthews, Pineville, and somewhere on North Tryon
  • Circuit City
  • Media Play
  • Gus's (if memory serves me correctly) on the first floor of the Cameron Brown building
  • Krispy Kreme on Albemarle

Annabelle's

Was this the same Annabelles's that used to be at Valley Hills Mall in Hickory? God, the childhood memories of sasparilla and the salad bar. It was sad when that place closed. I never realized that there was more than one!

A few others...

- Incredible Universe (where Garden Ridge at Carolina Place is currently)

- Groucho's Deli uptown

- Celebration Station

- Baja Fresh (I mourn this more than any...the burritos served "wet" we're delicious)

- Slug's Rib (probably already mentioned)
