Big Church Going Up In E. Hartford/Manchester Line

About a month ago I got off Spencer street exit and looked to my right and was like "WHOA, where did THAT come from?"

There is an existing church there but they are doing a major major expansion. They are straddling the Manchester East Harford line where Silver Lane becomes Spencer Street right off Exit 1 on I384. I think this is going to be the first "megachurch" East Of the River with First Cathedral in Bloomfield being the only other in the state I know of.

I decided to visit last Sunday and was very impressed. Very very diverse crowd. Professional black females next to 80 year old white grandmothers in the choir, Latin folks, various other ethnic folks - just a real nice reflection of this area.

The renderings are really beautiful, I can't wait to see it finished. Whether you be a believer or not it's a good thing. I'll take a new church expansion over a porn shop any day for the community.

Wow, another mega church in the region. That should be a good compliment east of the river for First Cathedral in Bloomfield. The mega churches are great because they encourage diversity that traditional smaller churches haven't really been able to achieve. I really like that about them and the buildings themselves can fill a host of community needs as well.

I wondered how long it would take before this was turned negative. What's wrong with non profits not being taxed? I'd rather private individuals do something like this to serve the community than the government. You should be happy as it can actually lessen the tax burden via civic outreach.

How about this take: It's amazing what can happen when members of the community come together and pool thier resources.

I have no problem with religion in theory, I do have some problems with it in practice and this comment does have a lot of merit. People directly profit from religion so why are they exempt from paying taxes as any other for profit enterprise. Some may come close but most churces do not provide nearly the level of services as a traditional social service related non profit. Shelters and other social service non profits are not selling anything and the director at a sucessful one helping the truly disadvantaged is more than likely a lot less wealthy than the pastor at a wealthy church with a well to do congregation. No feel that most of these churches would not turn away a person in need, but I'm not so sure they get too many people of need coming in anyway. You made me think......

There are a lot of non profits not handling funds properly. Why single out a few rogue churches and not just rogue non profits?

Your disdane for the church is noted, lets try and keep personal vendettas out of it. I am.

I think there are businesses that are non profits that act much more like businesses than non-profits. I work for a non profit, and we act NOTHING like a non-profit. Its the way of the world. There'd be a few more sources I would go after that are non profits to make them pay taxes before I started going after religious entities.

Not sure about the dairy mart etc, but it's the one on the left heading into Manchester right on the town line along side 384. It was red brick with white trim before.

There is a Webster bank across the street. I think they used to be Assembly of God but went independant.

JayHass:

Thanks for the info -- the brick building is now owned by the church -- it housed Dairy Mart and Town Line Liquors. Webster is next door along with a Texaco. The mega-churches are getting popular! Here a mega-chuch moved -- and in its place an adult entertainment place moved in. (a year later, a church moved back in.)
