After the record breaking success of the women's ACC tournament, Greensboro has its eyes on a bigger prize. The city wants to host the 2012 Women's Final Four. Greensboro will be hosting the womens NCAA Regionals this month which is one step under the final four. The other regional will be held in Dallas, Fresno, and Dayton. Womens basketball is really gaining popularity in Greensboro. Every year the womens ACC tourney is held in Greensboro, it breaks the attendance record. The NCAA is also starting to take notice. Typicall the womens final four are held in major US cities like the mens Final Four. However the womens final four attendance kinda struggles in those large markets. Greensboro is trying to pitch the idea that smaller is better and that the Gate City will treat the womens final four as the biggest event in the region unlike larger cities where its just another event. Does Greensboro have a chance considering its track record in hosting major sports tournaments? As for the chances of Greensboro ever hosting the mens Final Four, thats really slim because the mens final four are played in domes. Charlotte doesnt even qaulify for it anymore. Greensboro did host the Mens Final Four back in 1974 and in 1998 Greensboro hosted the Mens NCAA East Coast Regionals.

tournament officials are spending $35,000 to bring in former "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry for a free downtown concert March 23 on the eve of this month's Greensboro NCAA regional.

The idea, Brown said, is to extend the tournament atmosphere throughout the city."

There will also be a "tournament town" fan fest downtown in center-city park. Greensboro is branding itself as Tournament Town.

makes a lot of sense really. Would be a great location. The GSO is still in my opinion the best place to watch basketball in the state. The upper level is almost vertical so you're right over the court. Not miles away like the old Charlotte Colisium.

btw here is a scene when 2007 American Idol 3rd runner up Chris Daughtry performed in downtown Greensboro during the weekend of the NCAA women's regionals at the coliseum. over 23,000 people packed downtown Greensboro. Chris Daughtry is from McCleansville, NC which is a bedroom community outside of Greensboro. video footage recorded from this concert will appear on one of Chris Daughtry's music videos.
