Thanks,Richy. :D I love hotels, one of my favorite types of development. Here's what the end result should be.

Wow thats really nice and semi modern looking. I like that alot. I hope they get rid of the sound wall so it can really be seen from the interstate. I'm sorry I don't know bout you guys but I don't care for those sound walls at all. When I am on an interstate in a city I like to see all the development that they have, sound walls only hamper it.

Crowne Plaza to give BR a bigger city feel?? All those hotels along Constitution Ave!! Wonder how many stories this will be on that tract of land?? Hopefully at least 7-stories. The I-10/College Drive area solidifies the claim of BR's Largest Hotel district.

Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn prototype could come to Constitution

A 143-room Holiday Inn is scheduled to open on Constitution Avenue in December, the same time that the neighboring Holiday Inn Select could switch over to a Crowne Plaza. Negotiations are under way to rebrand the Holiday Inn Select.

I dont know how i feel about the rebranding of the holiday inn select into a crowne plaze simply because of the building. I would much rather like to see crowne plaza build a new upscale looking hotel then occupy a building that really dosnt have an upscale look. Unless of course, they plan on over-hauling the exterior, but in either case, I do welcome the development and i think it would be great for the city.

I knew we would be getting a Crowne Plaza!! :w00t: And a prototype Holiday Inn!?! :D :D

Here is a 141 room prototype Holiday Inn in Kansas City. Sorry Richy, only 6 stories. But some of that land is to be used as Holiday Inn Executive/Crowne Plaza parking, so with the addition of Holiday Inn parking maybe taller ? :)

If they do move into the old building i hope they update the building better than Red Lion...is it just me because it seems as if the red lion is still unfinished....i hope thats not the final product

The Red Lion is hideous and the parking lot is always empty. Maybe people arnt staying there, because it is ugly? hhmmmm :whistling:

Also, the "hotel district" is really going to have a mid town feel to it now with all these new 6 to 7 story hotels on either side of the interstate, it will look great for people passing through.

I guess the 294-rooms and large meeting room had something to do with the move. Not sure if they will improve the exterior or not??

Nice looking hotel Dan; looks more like a Holiday Inn Select is supposed to. How big is that tract of land compared to the hotel in the pic?? You are right, they will have to park somewhere.

Yeah you right Buckett. Those and the 8-story Hampton Inn and 8-story Embassy Suites too

I don't believe the Marriott being that tall looks all that out-of place with those hotels on the other side of I-10 + the 6 and 8-story office buildings in Corporate Square + CitiPlace's 5 -story Hancock Bank. The Marriott looks cool when driving east down Perkins Rd. between Acadian Thruway & College Drive. At that height it's gives the presence of a big city feel.

No Bobby, no word on the W aLoft :dontknow: I would like to know that myself. I know a while back that the lack of parking was an issue at the City Planning meeting. Hooters, Clicks Billiards, Sullivan's Ringside and Fox-n-Hound have those lots completely packed; esp. on weekends. With the addition of the hotel that would make a nice entertainment complex.

This would be the perfect time for W aLoft to scrap the proptype and go vertical like Dan illustrated awhile back. Instead of only 5-stories they could go up to 12 and have more parking. + the Marriott could always use a companion.

The only reason I find the Marriott looks out of place is because there is nothing in it's immediate vicinity that is close to it's height. I think if somewhere on Corporate or on Constitution there would be something half of it's height it would make it look more "in place" so to speak. But compared to it's height everything just looks flat and even. I like more of a jagged look when it comes to buildings being clustered together, that's why I'm wanting more towers downtown. Everything down there looks flat with just 3 buildings sticking out. It's just my opinion. LOL :shades:

"Another hotel planned for College Drive area

Plans to build a Microtel Inn & Suites on College Drive have been submitted to the city-parish. The 69-unit hotel would be built near the Concord Avenue intersection, behind the College Crossing shopping center. Donnie Jarreau, who is developing the hotel, says no start date has been for construction. "Our intent is to build it, but we're not 100% sure if we're going to do this," Jarreau says. "We have been approached about selling the property and we're keeping our options open." The hotel would tie in with other Jarreau-owned developments around the College-Perkins Road intersection, such as College Crossing, Southdowns Shopping Center and Spectrum Gym. "We kind of thought it would be successful with the retail and the restaurants in that area," he says. "

With the 13-story Jacobs Plaza in the background the 7-story Drury Inn & Suites should be a nice addition to the Essen Lane corridor. The new 8-story office Summa office about to start should be visible to the left of Jacobs when complete.

*Business Report Property of the Week

A 180-room Drury Inn & Suites is under construction near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Essen Lane. The seven story hotel is set to open Dec. 1. The St. Louis based hotel chain is overseeing construction and Dave Albertson, a staffer, is the architect.

Updates:

  • The Value Place by Cortana is almost finished and the one by Sherwood fronting the interstate is topped out
  • Th Drury Inn at Essen Lane/I-10 is starting on the 5th floor
  • Land has been cleared and framing for the foundation of the new Holiday Inn has started, it should be at least 6 stories
  • Cambria Suites has been topped out and painted and is now applying the finishing touches

Also: The empty building attached to Esplanade Mall has been repainted and cleaned out or gutted. This could be good and bad. It could mean that the W aloft is cancelled and they're trying to market the property since it won't be blocked. Or they could be fixing it up to look nice next to the W aloft. Or wishfully think, they could be fixing up that empty space to use as the hotel lobby and put the hotel on top. It's a possibility, since they were having concerns about parking spaces. :dontknow::D

Thanks for the updates on the hotels Dan! I'm with you on this, it's fun to watch the hotels going up. That will be an impressive string of hotels along Constitution Ave. once Holiday Inn gets started.

Many times I said how much I liked your proposed rendering for a more "vertical" W aLoft....to throw the prototype out bec. of concerns with the limited parking in Esplanade. It sure would look great at your 13-stories next to the Marriott :shades: I went to the city planning meeting way back on this subject; they seemed to like the vertical idea; however not sure what the W a Loft people think?? I need to make some phone calls.

Could that possibly be the location for the new Avenue E bowling alley?? That would not totally suprise me.

Cambria Suites looks cool! I like the color; the historic Hotel King downtown may want to look into something similar instead of the blinding white paint that covers the entire structure.

Drury Inn will look nice off Essen Lane between Shaw and Jacobs. They are actually using a crane and real cement; unlike the cheap wooden/metal bracing of Value Place at Sherwood/I-12.

Will Value Place near Cortana be four stories too??

Actually that's a real W aloft rendering that's going up in Beijing or somewhere in China.

I almost forgot about that bowling alley. That would be great! :D

Both are four stories. Even though the hotels are made of cheap pre-fab parts, they still have a massive feel to them, especially the one on Sherwood.

Deal opens door for Howell Place SpringHill suites

"A Dallas-based hotel operator has closed on a $2.1 million deal that allows construction to start soon on a 159-room hotel in the Howell Place development. Raleigh Prism One, doing business as Viking Fund Baton Rouge, purchased the land and plans from High Desert Investors in a deal that closed Thursday. Richard Preis, who is developing Howell Place, says the deal allows construction to start soon on a Marriott SpringHill Suites. Four other mid-priced hotels are either under construction or in the works for Howell Place-a Holiday Inn Express, Microtel Inn, Hampton Inn and Candlewood Suites."

Rode by the Staybridge at Southgate Towers yesterday; they had some concrete columns coming out of the ground; real concrete ;) Will fit right in with the LSU area architecture! Where did you find that little pic Dan??

That's alot of new hotels planned for Howell Place for the airport! After so many years with nothing there.

Still a 90% chance the Renaissance Hotel on Bluebonnet is built  But the article never said anything else about the W Hotel??? I thought originally it was a W aLoft?? Which one is it?? :dontknow: And it doesn't talk of the Cambria Suites which is the Real Estate property of the Week, the Holiday Inn about to go up or the Drury Inn. And all the new hotels at Howell Place either....

Holding up on hotel deals

In the past two years, plans for new hotels became common around Baton Rouge. Hotel occupancies spiked post-Katrina, and the GO Zone program and low interest financing spurred people to look at entering the lodging business. There were plans to add about 2,700 new hotel rooms, which would have boosted the local supply by 30%.

But much of that construction hasn't happened. Only two properties have opened, a Residence Inn on Corporate Boulevard and a Hampton Inn and Suites on Reiger Road. A handful more are under construction, but there's been little visible activity with some of the bigger, high-profile projects, such as the 350-room Marriott Renaissance Hotel on Bluebonnet Boulevard, the 250-room W Hotel at Interstate 10 and College Drive and a 100-room hotel in Perkins Rowe.

Mike Wampold, who plans to develop the Marriott Renaissance Hotel on the site of a half-built Jimmy Swaggart Ministries dorm, says the problems have been caused by the tight credit market. "Things are crazy in this economy," he says. "Conventional lenders have tightened up on criteria." Wampold says he's struggling with costs for the hotel and says he should know in a few weeks if the project will happen. He pegged the likelihood at 90%. "We're trying to make the best decisions we can right now," he says.--Timothy Boone

I really wish they'd take away the sound wall in front of the Cambria. :(

The 100 room hotel in Perkins Rowe is going to happen. It was posted in the Advocate just a few days ago. That leaves just two. Of course, those are the biggest ones. I surely hope they build that W hotel. I went the W aloft website and we're not on the future openings, so maybe it could be a full W or we lost it all together.

I sure hope they do that Renaissance. Everytime I go to the mall I look up to if it has started. :(
