Near Bluebonnet, specifically the land at the soon to be built Pecu exit. Blue Bayou wanted to build there but were shut down. They then asked to look into the land on Suma (Behind Hyatt and near the hospitals) and of course realized that wasn't going to happen. That's the only major development that I have heard of that's shopping for a large tract of land.

I fully expect them to move to Livingston or Ascension. They need land and if Baton Rouge won't help them they will leave.

Well, the article did say owning two hotels allow for efficiencies of scale, so I'm guessing he's trying to balance out the two and make sure they both get the optimum number of people and don't compete unnecessarily. And of course make more money for himself.

L'Auberge hotel makes list of biggest U.S. projects

The 206-room hotel Pinnacle Entertainment is building at its L'Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge is the 10th largest hotel project to start construction in the U.S. this year. Lodging Econometrics, which compiled the list, says through the first half of the year, construction has begun on nearly 24,600 rooms. That's far off the boom-time peak of 40,000 hotel room construction starts per quarter in 2007 and 2008. The biggest single hotel project to start in 2011 is the 1,167-room Washington Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C., reports The Wall Street Journal. L'Auberge Casino & Hotel is set to open in summer 2012.

Renaissance Hotel holds contest to name restaurant

The Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel is looking for assistance in naming its restaurant. The hotel is holding a contest on Facebook, asking for suggestions to name the hotel’s upscale restaurant, which will specialize in Louisiana and regional cooking. Peter Dunn, general manager of the Renaissance, which is set to open in late September or early October, says the contest is an opportunity to connect with the public before the hotel opens. "We’re looking for something unique and memorable, and the winning name will be the one that best speaks to our upscale atmosphere and our delicious, regional cuisine," Dunn says. The person who comes up with the winning name will win a weekend stay in the Renaissance, a private dinner for two in the restaurant and a $50 bar tab." The contest is open through Monday; to submit a nomination, visit facebook.com/RenaissanceBatonRouge.

Renaissance Hotel construction in home stretch

As the opening date for the Renaissance Hotel approaches, officials are generally confident the facility will take shape in time. General Manager Peter Dunn says the target date for opening is Sept. 29, but that an early October date is also possible because construction must finish first. "It's a Marriott requirement," Dunn says.

A media tour of the hotel on Tuesday revealed crews working diligently to assemble fixtures and appliances, furnish rooms, and cover walls and floors. The lobby and ballroom, built from scratch, remain busy work zones. Progress is most evident in individual rooms, where wallpaper, beds and appliances reflect the hotel's mission of integrating local color.

Each hallway will feature red-and-white carpeting depicting crab traps and magnolias. Swamp-scene wallpaper and local artwork cover walls, and room cabinets have been crafted from cypress wood. Each bathroom features alligator-skin vinyl trim and, along one wall, a stylized list of Cajun definitions. Meeting rooms share names with bayous and rivers. The restaurant, Tallulah, will serve Louisiana cuisine.

Ted Terrell, vice president of development for Wampold Companies, says, "It's hard to believe we're six weeks away. But consider what it looked like a year ago." The abandoned Jimmy Swaggart Ministries dorm project, halted in 1989, remained skeletal until 2010.

The dorm structure, developer Mike Wampold says, "really lent itself to a great hotel." Finding an efficient plan was the biggest challenge, he says, but on the third try, "we knew what we wanted to be and how to get there." For a slideshow of the work going on at the hotel, click here.

And opening in time for football season can only help!

The the new downtown Hampton Inn was discussed on BR Growth thread....here is more...one question? It will have an urban upscale look?? Does the rendering portray this?? Even RiverPlace gets a mention...

Construction begins on Hampton Inn

Construction began Wednesday on the $9.2 million Hampton Inn & Suites at Lafayette and Main streets downtown.

The Greenville, S.C., developer said construction is expected to take 14 months for the seven-story, 137-room hotel, its first in Louisiana. Forty-two of the guest rooms will have balconies and 36 will be suites. The hotel will have 1,000 square feet of meeting space, an executive boardroom, a business center and an exercise room, Windsor/Aughtry said.

Financing was provided by Wells Fargo, though the development received $3.2 million in funding via $17 million in federal new market tax credits obtained through the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority.

Windsor/Aughtry spokesman Bill Fayssoux said the hotel has a 20-year agreement with the state to provide 137 spaces — one for each room — in the nearby LaSalle parking garage. He said it will be the company’s third hotel with a lease agreement with a municipality for parking and a good arrangement because state workers and hotel guests tend to have different schedules.

Local developer Richard Preis, who brought Windsor/Aughtry and the RDA together and took part in a three-way land swap that included Gordon LeBlanc and St. James Episcopal Church, said the hotel will pave the way for further development downtown, including his own long-delayed RiverPlace development across Lafayette Street. Preis said he has commissioned a market study for development of the property, but he would not provide any details of what that development might entail.

Windsor/Aughtry said the “upscale, urban” look of the Hampton Inn hotel “fits in perfectly with the contemporary look and feel of downtown Baton Rouge.”

Renaissance Hotel sets opening date

The 12-story, 256-room Renaissance Hotel on Bluebonnet Boulevard will open Monday, the hotel announced today. The 206,000-square-foot hotel features a fully equipped fitness center, a courtyard-style outdoor pool with water and fire features, and 13,000 square feet of meeting space including a 7,500-square-foot ballroom. Also included are 28 VIP Club Level rooms and 63 luxury hotel suites. The hotel has been developed from the partially completed Jimmy Swaggart Ministries dorm that had sat as a vacant eyesore for years. Work on the hotel started in 2007, but the project was put on hold until last year due to the recession. The Renaissance was developed and is owned by Baton Rouge-based Wampold Companies, and will be managed by Memphis-based Davidson Hotels & Resorts, whose portfolio includes 48 upscale, full-service independent and branded hotels across the country.

Three weeks go by fast...

Officials mark groundbreaking for downtown Hampton Inn

One of downtown Baton Rouge's most high-profile and controversial projects marked its vertical construction kickoff today. Groundwork has already begun on the Hampton Inn & Suites at the corner of Lafayette and Main streets, and officials were on hand at the site to dedicate the $17 million project.

The seven-story, 137-room hotel is expected to open in fall 2012. Hotel construction will employ 110 workers, and the finished hotel is expected to bring about 50 full-time jobs, 10 part-time jobs and 55 service-vendor jobs. Mayor Kip Holden says the project marks a milestone for Baton Rouge."Three hundred years ago, this land along the Mississippi River was known as Baton Rouge, or Red Stick," he says. "Today, we see the red stick again, signaling that this is a special place."

Seems pretty foolish that they'd be missing the bowling conference and part of football season.

They should be wrapping up construction right now...not just starting it.

No big deal.....Hamptons are disposable hotels. Someone will have to tear this one down in 25 years and start over.

Would still like to see a high-rise convention center style hotel for the downtown riverfront...

Driving I-10 at night the Renissance hotel looks nice all lit-up behind the Mall of La....

The former Cambria Suites/Aspen Suites off I-10 near College Drive is now a Doubletree

I actually think there is a market for between 300 and 600 more hotel rooms downtown. I'd honestly like to see a large high end hotel to accompany the Hilton on the riverfront, but I think the sweet spot for a mid-range hotel is around the River Center - St. Louis and Government area, in particular. Ferdinand/America street also has potential for being adjacent to the river center, North Blvd, and walking distance to 3rd street.

The other area that I think would be a good site for a hotel is on the north end around where the Hampton is coming up because of the market created by the state government being centered up there. The old Advocate site would be ideal for a hotel facing the river and a smaller condominium/retail building facing Main. Unfortunately, I think land prices on that block are probably too high for anything small.

I would also like to see more small office, retail, and residential "in fill" around the Convention between 4th and 6th.
