Downtown Hampton Inn & Suites eyes Friday opening

The $17 million Hampton Inn & Suites is set to open at Lafayette and Main streets downtown on Friday, pending some final certifications from its parent company, Hilton Worldwide. Allison Crump, director of sales for the new hotel, says Hampton is already taking online reservations for Friday, May 10, and later. Bookings for this weekend will commence as soon as Hilton gives the go-ahead, she says. "We have a lot of demand, and it's going to do fabulous," Crump says. "Many people are interested in the hotel. It's beautiful." Most of the hotel's 137 guest rooms include balconies with Mississippi River views. A staff of 40 full-time employees is already in place. The seven-story hotel will offer guests complimentary breakfast, access to a fitness center, and 1,000 square feet of meeting space. —April Castro

Hampton Inn leasing state garage spaces for guests

Hampton Inn guests who park in the state-owned LaSalle Garage need not worry about getting towed. The downtown hotel is leasing 137 parking spaces in the facility, which provides unreserved parking spaces for state employees and YMCA patrons. "There is no public parking in this garage, so there is no anticipated need for towing," says Division of Administration spokesman Michael DiResto. Towing became an issue in another of the state-owned garages on Third Street when Republic Parking, which manages the state's five parking garages, hired Riverside Towing for enforcement. The company—known for its aggressive tactics—towed the vehicles of several patrons attending events downtown who had parked in spaces they assumed were reserved only during normal business hours. The state has since suspended the practice. The agreement between the Hampton Inn and the state is a 20-year base lease, with two 10-year renewal options. The hotel is paying $164,400 annually in the first five years of the arrangement, with lease rates rising every five years after that. "Towing hasn't been an issue since we sat down with the state and discussed it," says DDD Executive Director Davis Rhorer. "I think this is a very smart use of garages. The majority of people will be staying in the hotel on evenings and weekends, when the parking garage is empty

Wow! A 5th hotel for Cabela's Parkway? Making a dozen total in the I-10/Hwy 30 area...

Another hotel planned on Cabela's Parkway in Gonzales

The intersection of La. 30 and Interstate 10 in Gonzales is already home to a dozen hotels, four of which are clustered on and near Cabela's Parkway, but come January 2015, the area is gaining at least one more—a SpringHill Suites Marriot. Gonzales City Clerk and Finance Director Clay Stafford says the hotel, which Avalon Hotel Group owner and president Aaron Patel is building, will be located at 1 Cabela's Parkway. A press release announcing the plan says construction on the hotel will start as early as next month. The SpringHill Suites will contain 96 rooms as well as conference rooms, an outdoor pool, a fitness center and a bar. It will be Avalon Hotel Group's second Marriot hotel in Gonzales. The group also owns TownPlace Suites, which is located on George Martinez Road off of Cabela's Parkway. In addition to TownPlace Suites, SpringHill Suites will join La Quinta Inn & Suites, Supreme Inn & Suites and the Hampton Inn in the Cabela's quadrant. Both the La Quinta and the Hampton opened earlier this year. —Rachel Alexander

This was a short article so I went ahead and posted the whole thing.

"Downtown Baton Rouge hotel project gets approval from Louisiana Senate

The Louisiana Senate approved the taxing structure Monday (May 12) to allow for development of a hotel in downtown Baton Rouge at the site of an old state office building. Baton Rouge Democratic lawmaker Sen. Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb, who sponsored the legislation, said on the Senate floor that passage would make way for the 146-room hotel. Local developer Mike Wampold bought the 12-story building at 150 N. Third St. in February from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. BRAF submitted the winning bid of $10.3 million for it a month before. The art deco-era building, which served as headquarters for Louisiana National Bank from 1925 to 1970, was built in 1926. If the bill, which passed 34-5 in the Senate, is approved by the House and gets adopted into law, it would create the Old LNB Building Redevelopment District as a special tax increment financing district with borders only around the proposed hotel. Tax revenue in the district could then be used to help fund the development. Three other downtown hotel developments used similar tax structures. The proposed hotel is expected generate an estimated $611,000 in sales and occupancy tax revenue -- $275,000 of which would stay with the city-parish and the remainder with the development, the bill's fiscal note says. Construction is expected to start at the end of this year and be completed by the end of 2015. Adding to the already existing 820 hotel rooms currently in downtown Baton Rouge and the 89-room Holiday Inn Express planned for the old Baton Rouge Savings and Loan Association building, the Wampold hotel could help break a longtime goal for downtown Baton Rouge of 1,000 rooms."

Hard to fathom downtown BR had ZERO Hotel Rooms for OVER 15 years? from 1985 to 2001? Thought the Belle was built earlier than this?? When talks began of renovating the old Capitol House the ole fuddy-duddy councilman said "it would be like putting lipstick on a dead woman" ...since then...

Belle of BR(old Sheraton)....300 hotel rooms....built 2001

Hilton Capitol House....290 rooms

Hotel Indigo...93 rooms

Hampton Inn... 137 rooms

-----------

NOW = 820 Rooms....+ possibly more

-----------

Holiday Inn Express (old EBRATS Bldg)....88 rooms...glad the building will be re-used...just not another hotel at this location

& BR's 1st Skyscraper at 12-Stories (still yet to be named)....146 rooms on Third Street

WOULD= 1,054....Wow! That's a lot of new hotel rooms in about 13 years...surpassing the 1,000 room goal...

Downtown Baton Rouge on track to surpass 1,000 hotel rooms

As much as I enjoy seeing old properties renovated to their past glory...with this most recent announcement looks like seeing a new hotel being built from the ground up has decreased greatly...like the proposed Convention Center Hotel Tower for the renovated River Center...of these 6 hotels mentioned...ONLY 2 have actually been built from the ground up...
