Is Richmond ready for another music venue -- perhaps a B.B.KING's? While the city lacks an arena to attract the big shows, Richmond is gaining a reputation as a mecca for mid-sized facilities featuring mid-stream concerts. Already, Toads and The National are bringing suburbanites and out-of-towners to Center City. Why not a club specializing in Blues, and especially on "The Deuce." B. B. KING's would be a major atraction, especially since they are located only in New York, Memphis, Nashville and Orlando. But if KING's cannot be enticed to lend its name to The Hippodrome, a club in the old theatre would still attract an untapped audience, IMO.

Man Pantele loves throwing big bucks at private arts projects. As much as I'd like to see this happen, I would prefer private investors get this going and let the City take care of issues it's been putting off for years such as downtown road and sidewalks. Why do they keep ignoring the obvious?

Condos, apartments and other types of residences are going up or being converted all over Jackson Ward. But I bet a quarter I know of one that few of you are aware of.

Behind the Empire Theatre and between Emerick Flats and the Milk Bottle on West Marshall there is a building that used to be a Foreign Car show room. It covers a large area, but is only 2-stories high. I passed it recently and noticed lots of construction activity. I asked one of the workment about it and he smiled and said "Condos!"

I believe our sometime contributor Brent lives practically across the street just west of the old converted Fire House now known as Gallery 5.

Seems extremely suspicious that a building could stand for a hundred years and just happen to collapse the day before renovations were set to begin.

It happens. If you read the article, the building already had structural issues.

They had started to alter some interior walls last week to prep for the stabilization this week. I think the concern is that they may have actually weakened the structure in the stabilization steps. Just a day before men were working in that building, taking down walls and cutting holes in others. 12 hours later, it falls. Very close to killing someone.

I question the process that someone say it was safe enough to place workers in there to stabilize it. Sounds like that building should have never passed the "acid" test to rehab. If it was that close to failure, who said it could be saved? Was the proper due diligence done prior to men entering the building? Was the person truly qualified to make that decision? Was an engineer stamp on that document?

12 hours was the difference. That is too close. That building was way to close to failure to have work being done.

The Richmond Economic Development Authority is looking for a developer to complete a project on a piece of land it owns in Jackson Ward.

The site at Second and Marshall streets is a parking lot used by a nearby office building, but the economic development group believes it is better suited for a mixed-use building.

The EDA is accepting project proposals until Sept. 30. According to the group

Sounds fairly suburban initially. Haven't seen a rendering or plan yet though.

Channel 8 showed one in their newsbreak. I had seen the area fenced off the other day and figured something was up.

Ok theyweren't renderings but they showed some of their work. Here's their site.

A South Carolina developer wants to build two hotels near North 3rd Street and I-95. The first would be a 144-room Hampton Inn and Suites and, possibly later, a 123-room extended-stay Hilton or Marriott.

From today's RTD: http://www2.timesdis...-223207/342201/

I have a feeling its the Kahn Development Company behind this but you never know.:whistling:

Sorry for the misinformation.:scared: After checking around it is in fact the "Windsor Aughtry Company" that is developing the site now. Kahn Development had interest in the site a couple of years ago.

I really don't like the fact that maybe a surface parking lot is going beside the hotel. Sorry but this is Downtown Richmond middle of no where Suburbia. The surface lot should not pass the planning commissions desk. Plus if this is a suburban style hotel it will look out of place with the High Rises of the Bio-Technology Park next door, Convention Center and Brownstones of Jackson Ward.<_<

Cam, the Channel 8 video you mention showing the proposed hotels in Jackson Ward has been posted by calwinston in the Richmond International Airport thread which also has a channel 8 story on the status of the airport connector from Rte. 895.

Edwin Slipek, Jr. has done a masterful cover story for the current Style Weekly about renewal activity in Jackson Ward. Specifically, Ed focuses on the accomplishments of property owner and developer Ron Stallings.

The full story is quite revealing and hopeful about revitalization of "The Ward". It contains some excellent photographs of The Hippodrome/Taylor Mansion complex which is on schedule for a spring opening.

Any word on the Jackson Place development? I remember reading that RTD article about W/A cancelling it.... but is it really true? I mean, it was so good, and I'm pretty sure W/A will eventually come back because of our extreme need for more rooms for those people coming in for 2015..... and besides those plans were superior, and really would've spruced up Jackson Ward with an appropriate architectural flavor. This top link below seems really sophisticated and really seems to give you a grand idea of what would have happened (and what hopefully will happen). The urban study, planning concept, space and ambience and final proposals sections give the overall visual feel of what could've happened. I know that eventually Windsor/Aughtry will have to come back and provide us with the extra rooms. If they build it, it would be very much needed and very much appreciated. But most of all, it would breathe new life back into Jackson Ward, which could start the beginning of a new renaissance of construction in Jackson Ward, thus turning it into THE entertainment district for downtown, even though I would personally reserve that spot for Broad Street :D

Edit: Sorry! I forgot those links
