Nice article in the New York Times last fall about progress in the redevelopment of downtown Birmingham. The writer noted that Birmingham escaped the "urban renewal" demolition era with less damage than most U.S. cities and has great potential for renovation and redevelopment. Local attitudes about downtown have changed for the better over the past few years.

Another building renovation is in the works for downtown Birmingham. Plans have been revised for the Parisian project, the renovation of the former Booker T. Washington Insurance Co. building at the corner of 3rd Ave N and 18th Street. The ground floor will be all commercial space, the 2nd and 3rd floors half office and half residential, and the 4th and 5th floors all residential. A total of 24 apartments are included.

Work should start in March and it should by finished by the end of the year. The project is named after the Parisian department store that was on the property back in the 1920s.

A downtown Publix grocery store will be part of the upcoming 20 Midtown development at 20th Street and 3rd Avenue South. The Publix building will also include interior parking and 86 apartments.

Another building in the 20 Midtown development includes Starbucks-anchored ground floor retail and 36 apartments above. The Starbucks is supposed to open in summer 2015.

Lots of cool things going on in midtown these days.

Another key renovation project is underway in downtown Birmingham. The Leer Tower is undergoing a $22 million renovation with plans for 96 apartments and 7,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The project includes restoration of the building's ornate ballroom, lobby and event space as well.

Great news for downtown, and hopefully this will help spur more redevelopment on the western side of downtown.
