I never noticed this before but in the rendering of Shoppes at Gateway, you can see Marshalls and BestBuy in it.

I think they were just using them as examples of the types of stores they are looking for. As far as I know, J.C. Penny is the only store that has officially agreed to lease space.

That area practically is the suburbs. The only difference is what side of 8 mile its on.

The biggest benifit to the city will be the taxes colleted. As for new shopping options, its not to far from existing ones to make too much of a difference.

I know, once you get north of McNichols you're basically in the suburbs... Sure you still have two miles before you reach the city limits, but it certainly isn't "Midtown".

I'm confused why they're choosing to develop in this area. Why not focus it around downtown,new center etc. That's where people will most likely go to shop, not on the outer most edges of the city. I can fully understand trying to develop residentialy in this area rather than shopping. How is this area anyway, I'm not familiar with it?

DetroitCity, they are developing this near the state fairgrounds because most people in Detroit live in the neighborhoods, not in downtown or midtown. Ever been up to Green Acres, Sherwood Forest, University District, & Palmer Park? Those are the people the city is trying to keep from moving out.

Not to mention they're hoping to attract a few shoppers from Ferndale, etc.

People live close to the suburbs because that is where the shopping is. Its like a bowl effect or something.

I think that is why southwest Detroit is doing so well, people who live there are close to the suburbs and Downtown.

It looks like Penny's may get some company, Marshalls is reportedly looking at putting a store here as well.

Southwest Detroit's proximity to the suburbs has nothing to do with its stability. The community (and especially the strong hispanic community) is the reason why Southwest Detroit is doing so well. People there are willing to shop at a neighborhood store as opposed to driving out to Dearborn, Southfield, or Livonia for all their needs.
