What will moving to New Center accomplish? You'd have create more new parking that'd sit empty for much of the summer. Or you keep it downtown and take avantage of the parking freed up during the Lions and Tigers offseason. Further, keeping the arena downtown will only enhace the business district around it. We're finally starting to see the critical mass of businesses that is attracting people on non game nights.

Either New Center or next to the Motor City Casino. There's plently of parking there and it would redevelop that area into a entertainment district instead of a neighborhood with a casino in the middle of it all. Anyways, that would be more likely than New Center since the Illiches own the casino.

City wise, I think the city lost money. I don't think the taxes make up for the huge amount of money the city forked over. So the city is subsidizing the stadiums and some of the nearby businesses (who benefit from the stadiums). But the Stadiums bring people downtown who normally wouldn't go downtown, and who might come back.

I think New Center/Tech Town would also be a nice place for it. There are a lot of huge lots that are already parking lots, and it could fit in with the Tech Town vision. There's also good freeway access there. And "New Center Arena" does sound nice, although they probably wouldn't name it that.

Also, we're tearing down Joe Louis like it's nothing. In 30 years when real development is going on in the city and the arena would probably get rebuilt anyway, the land could be reclaimed for urban uses.
