That's sort of a stupid thing to say. First of all, it's not a threat--as if you'd really care if I left. Second of all, I'd rather fix the problem here. But that requires admitting we have one, which Americans are practically incapable of doing.

It's just getting a touch frustrating when you look at how Europeans approach life and land. Our Congress recently banned the slaughter of horse meat for human consumption. Literally, members of Congress stood on the floor of the House chamber and blasted barbaric Europeans for eating horse. The irony is too much to stomach given our massive and inhumane slaughterhouses. The Europeans have far more respect for animal life than we do, yet we're good God-fearing Americans and, thus, we don't eat horse! We can do no wrong.

We need a wake up call. I suggest reading this essay. It's a touch long-winded, but it makes the point beautifully: http://www.kunstler.com/mags_lumpenleisure.html.

So if you'd like to stick your head in the sand and tell anybody who--because he loves it that much--complains about America to get out, great. That's called the Bush administration and it's really made the world a lot nicer, don't you think?

I think what he's saying is that European nations have much better ways of approaching issues than America does, and have much better policies when it comes to land use, transportation policy, social issues, etc., than America does. Generalize all you want and take things out of context as you usually do, though...

Our standard of living if far above most of Europe's.

Our science, medicine and inventiveness dwarf the rest of the world.

We have more freedom, pay less taxes and have done more good than any country in the history of the human race.

Europe, though, is very pretty with nice architecture.

You lot really need to visit Europe ...

and I think I probably should move there.

Ban alcohol? Really? Not to be a broken record (thank you to those who have already lambasted this view) but have we still not figured out that banning something worsen its use and the consequences of its use? The best thing to do would be to relax drinking (and drug laws) not to toughen them. 18 year-olds should be able to drink, plan and simple. This raid was an utter waste of resources. Meanwhile, gunmen held up an entire bar (full of patronso of legal drinking age) in Parkville. All of the cops who raided Tempatation should have been walking beats to keep patrons (including 18-20 year olds) safe.

We are really irrational. The home of the brave, maybe, but the land of the free? Horse (which you can't eat in America, btw) sh**.

Bringing the debate back to topic...

the saga continues as half of the teens arrested appeared in court in Hartford yesterday. They were given the choice of performing community service (read a book & write a report or actual community service), plead guilty or plead not guilty.

Most of the teens yesterday took the community service option which would lead all charges to be dropped. Some though plead not guilty and will go to trial next month. The rest of the teens appear in court today...definitly something to watch.

Despite whether drinking should be banned, there should be 18+ nights, whose to blame....my real issue is in the handling of this situation by the HPD. The method of rounding up these 100+ individuals and bringing them up to the station, throwing them in cells, processing them for hours seems like it could have been done in a better way. Not to mention there were many complaints of treatment by officers by many arrested individuals.

Although I know I this mistreatment is nothing new for Hartford residents it is something that needs to be dealt with. Quite honestly all residents (of all races and ethnic backgrounds) as well as now visitors stand to be mistreated by Hartford's finest. I know an individual last week who is white, lives in the city, works with a family who runs a major business in the city and is is connected with the HPD but was "thrown around" by police while coming home one night recently because officers thought he was driving a stolen vehicle....amazing

Hmmm...Tycoon:

True.. We need to learn from Europe, but Europe hates the fact that they need to learn from us!! The next time a war breaks out there -- especially in France or Germany -- we should tell them, that they didn't want us there, so it is YOUR PROBLEM!! :) Of course, the eastern Europeans are happy that we are there for them -- since they lived under TYRANNY!!

Not quite. On whole, America is not stupid. But some of our policies are, and to the extent Europe's are better, yes, we should be more like Europe. To the extent ours our better, Europe should be more like us. Obviously, with regard to drinking alcohol, eating horse meat, riding public transportation, and using land, I think Europe's done a better job.

We certainly should be open to learning from other nations. We have a tendancy to get quite smug in America. To wit: the auto industry. Then we get all up in arms about other countries not liberalizing their markets, but we're pretty hypocritical in that department too. One of Bush's first decisions was to impose an import tax on steel! We've bailed out our auto and airline industries. We subsidize our farms, and now we're paying them to produce ethenol, which requires nearly as much fossil fuel to produce as it provides energy. It's an absolute racket.

Whaler0718:

As much as I think the banning of HORSEMEAT law is stupid, that doesn't concern me as much as some of the SOCIALIST/COMMUNISTS (FKA Democrats) in congress are trying to do. I am glad my congressman is one of the good guys and he didn't vote for the horsemeat ban. What a waste of time, but then, if they are doing STUPID THINGS -- like HORSEMEAT banning -- they can't have time to raise our TAXES!!! :)

I somehow doubt a country as young as America has done more good than, "any country in the history of the human race." I don't even think you could actually believe that. No doubt we have freedom in this country but do we have "more freedom" than the European countries? I don't think so. If by, "freedom" you mean we have little government control over big companies and developers that ruin the country while at the same time having lots of government control on "moral issues" like drinking, drugs, and marriage, then I guess you are right. Too bad we have it ass backwards in this country when it comes to our "freedoms." Loving your homeland is one thing but having blind, irrational love for America is what prevents this country from being progressive and improving.

This is a good time to point out that I am a registered Republican and I believe in less government. I am not advocating communism. But the truth of the matter is that our current state of affairs is a product not of the free market or choice but of corruption and corporate welfare. I've said it before; we have manipulated the free market out of existence.

If one were truly for a free market, then he would advocate stopping subsidizing oil. If you consider the soft costs of oil plus corporate subsidies (road building / auto manufacturer bailouts, etc.) the price of gas would be $9.00 a gallon. It sounds good when you're sitting in your raised ranch on an acre in the burbs to hear your local rep lambaste state aid to cities, but nobody ever talks about the fact that those who can't afford to drive subsidize those who can. These figures are from Suburban Nation and it's a very eye-opening book. I recommend it.
