City Plans Repair Projects

Roads, Sidewalks To Get Makeovers

NEW BRITAIN -- Black Rock Avenue and Myrtle Street are at the top of the list of city streets that need makeovers, Mayor Timothy Stewart said.

Roadways and sidewalks on those streets and many others will receive the repairs they need as part of a comprehensive program that officials hope will reduce the number of claims against the city for problems such as slips and falls.

The program, which represents a departure from the city's previous attempts to patch problem areas, will be paid for through a $17 million bond package the common council approved last month. Streets and sidewalks will be rebuilt and realigned as needed. The project will also include work on pavement overlays and the sealing of cracks.

"This is a program designed to fix virtually everything that is problematic in our streets over a five-year period of time," Stewart said Monday.

The project is part of Stewart's initiative to clean up the city's appearance. The program will also allow homeowners to hire city contractors to make similar repairs at a reduced cost, Stewart said. The city would provide homeowners with grant money to help defray improvement costs.

Crews will canvass city streets and prioritize them according to need, Stewart said.

Alderwoman Suzanne Bielinski, who sits on a committee that reviews claims against the city, said she was pleased to know that city sidewalks will be renovated, along with streets. The city's former approach, patching problem areas to save money, didn't provide lasting results, Bielinski said.
