July 4th Fireworks concert to move from Grimsley High School to the Greensboro Coliseum at the new amphitheater. The event has been held at Grimsley for a number of years. Before that the show was held downtown. Not sure why they moved the show out of downtown. Before that it was held at Carolina Circle Mall.

Last night, after the NCAA basketball games around midnight, I saw part of a "Main Street Murders (or Mysteries)" on the ID, Investigative Discovery channel. It was an hour-long true story about the murder of a beautiful Greensboro girl whose body was found in a local dumpster. Not a very pleasant subject, but it had lots of Greensboro city scenes and interviews with Greensboro dectectives and residents.

Maybe it will re-run.

Grimsley's building a new gym or something, and the construction area is right where the fireworks would've been.

That was a great article. I knew about Proximity Hotel, but didn't know that the city was so environmentally friendly on several fronts.

new Scott toilet paper commercial filmed in Greensboro. In the commercial you can catch a glimpse of Elm Street and some towers in downtown Greensboro. A Los Angeles-based production company was lured by the Piedmont Triad Film Commission which is based in Greensboro.

The news story says release date of the commercial hasn't been announced in GSO. But it's been running here in the New York City market for at least a couple of weeks.

already airing in New York City? haven't seen it here yet but here is the commercial from the website. You can see Elm Street at Lewis street and some alleys off of Elm. At the end of the commercial is an aerial of downtown Greensboro with the empire state building made of toilet paper rolls.

The invasion of the toilet paper rolls!

wow The empire state building really shows how small Greensboro's skyline is LOL

The Empire State building in the commercial is constructed from discarded toilet paper cardboard rolls.

I believe the spokesman says the new Scott rolls are only available at Sams Club, Walmart (and maybe Costco.) Wonder why it hasn't been released in the Carolina market?

It's always fun to see your city on TV.

PS: Someone calling him(her)self "citywatcher" has posted the commercial under "comments" in the News-Record story.

yep the Empire State Building made of toilet paper rolls. LOL. Looks like they got the scale right. Not sure why they haven't shown the commercial here yet but it is cool to see your city on a tv commercial. The scenes are mainly in Greensboro but I did see a few scenes of another town in the Triad because the street lights looked a little different. Not sure which city it is. It could be High Point.

I must say I am just floored. I am ashamed at the action city council took tonight. Councilwoman Mary Rakestraw, a republican presented a redistricting plan that removed 32,000 voters out of her district. The redistricting was not required by law because there was less than 10% population change which makes her proposal very suspicious. Its gerrymandering at its worst and its so blatant. Suspiciously a number of council persons were absent tonight so Mary Rakestraw had the votes to pass her plan while those absent wouldn't be affected by the fallout from this vote. During the last election Mary Rakestraw only won by a slim margin, less than a couple hundred votes. The portion of her district she removed was heavily democratic so its obvious she is doing all she can to stay elected. This action may be legal but its highly unethical and there need to be changes in laws that prohibits city council persons from drawing their own districts. im just floored and i'm ashamed of Greensboro right now. Mayor Bill Knight and Trudy Wade, both republican supported the change and surprisingly Nancy Vaughn who is an independent who always preaches transparency supported the change. No explanation was given for the change despite the fact that Mary Rakestraw said she would address it at the meeting tonight. She said NOTHING and you can clearly see her motives in just hows she responds to the questions in the myfox link below. The mayor and other two council persons didn't explain their vote either and we know why. On top of all that Mary redrew the two black districts in the city which is sure to create some confusion on election day this November. City Council in Greensboro is a disfunctional circus and its an embarrassment to the city of Greensboro. That should be expected since two of the former members from the disfunctional county commission are now city council persons. Based on the mayor's actions throughout his term and the fact that he doesn't even know how to run a city council meeting, he will likely be voted out of office along with a few others this November. And Bill Knight and the other republican's support for re-opening White Street landfill is only going to add fuel to the fire and anger enough citizens to vote them out. I have never been this angry over a city council vote and this has made me furious because it goes against everything democracy represents. I usually don't vote in the local elections but I will be voting this November!

Can you believe this bull? If I wasn't so pissed this would almost be funny.

Mary Rakestraw says the redistricting map just "mysteriously showed up on her doorstep".

“I don’t even know which precincts I won or lost. I don’t ever pay attention to that.”

She doesn't even know how to lie.

update: Nancy Vaughn, one of the council persons who supported the plan wants to reconsider after intense public opposition.

This is an outrage. These "leaders" have been hindering the politics of Greensboro and then have the nerve to pull something like this. The fact that there was public outcry gives me even more hope that these bozos will be out of office in November. I hope that the people of Greensboro will stick to their words and VOTE, for the future of this city....

Greensboro city council voted on a politically motivated redistricting plan anyway. Meanwhile WFMY News 2 reports on how city council is behaving. God I can't wait until November when a lot of these circus clowns will be voted out of office.

Greensboro City Council Called "Laughing Stock of North Carolina"

you can see a small sample on the video link below of the chaos that went on all night. The meeting didn't rap up until after 2 am. The mayor did a poor job last night in taking control of the meeting. The consensus is that its unlikely he will be re-elected in November. Council members were interrupting other council members. Once council member admitted to recording a private conversation with a former council person without her knowing and another council member (Trudy Wade) made false allegations of a citizen making threats to her after this citizen left a message on her machine. Some how this council person twisted it and made people believe this person made a bomb threat. Investigators listen to the message and said nothing about the message was threatening. The person called all city council members to voice her concern over the redistricting.

Remember the good ole days of City council before it was invaded by county commissioners when everyone got along?

yes I do. The County Commission has always been a circus and now that some of those commissioners have invaded city council, its a circus now. I've never seen such childish behavior in all my life. It's embarrassing. There are a number of people that need to go but the ones that really need to go are Mayor Bill Knight, Trudy Wade and Mary Rakestraw.

One of the bears that roamed the streets of Greensboro for a week was shot and killed on the runway at PTI airport by an airport worker. The bear was getting hostile. The story made headline news across the country from CNN to the Chicago Sun Times. Local authorities said it was up to animal control but animal control said just leave the bears alone and they will eventually leave. They didnt want to risk tranquilizing the bears in fear they may stumble into traffic and get killed. Maybe they should have done because one of the bears got killed anyway. There is still another bear roaming in downtown Greensboro. The bear has become a local celebrity, He has his own facebook page and a local car dealership has featured the bear in its commercial.

Greensboro's racial history and present tensions are featured in a CNN report. This is not how Greensboro wants to get national attention. Among issues discussed in the article is the landfill debate where the reopening of the landfill in a minority neighborhood is creating racial tension.
