...a wonderful heat is on in The City, pushing today's temp up to 85 degrees...and 100 out in Concord...

View of Corona Hts hill from Market at Sanchez...The "paint store" pictured was slated to become The Castro's "Trader's Joe's" location...but I guess giant SafeWay "higher-ups" down the street on Church & Duboce put a stop to that possibility...

Saturn Steps

19 June 2007

We returned home to Dolores Street from Vulcan steps by way of Saturn. Saturn steps are probably not as romantic or pastoral (for some) as a climb up Vulcan steps in the cool shade of so much lush green growth, where you could easily forget you're even in the city when giant Redwoods and wild blackberry bushes shut out every view...The steps of Saturn and Saturn street itself does provide its own SF charm of another sort...yet it, too, manages to feel like a "seperate little village" the way most neighborhoods feel in The City by the Bay. The journey down Saturn steps, which is twisted and lined with guard rails, was enjoyable though...with my best friend TR...

1/2 block from Woodhouse, corner of Church Street at Market...Red Jade replaced the very popular "Hong Kong Cafe" which still looked like the 1970s with 1970s prices. The owners sold HKC and moved back to Hong Kong a few years ago; Red Jade updated the interior with a slicker-modern look but the Chinese food is not good & very pricey. Azeteca is a burrito shop you'd only want to choose if eating late or just too lazy to walk to the Mission for the best Mexican food; Twilight Zone is a novelty shop with dozens of odd devices, wicked looking glass pipes, t-shirts and X-rated videos; Aardvark Books is a good "used and new books" shop with a great Ernest Heminway collection, collector's novels and has its own in-house cat--a big orange-tabby that generally lounges on the counter or in the window when it sunny...1-bedrom apts in this part of town (east of Castro) start at about $1200...Best transport/downtown commuter perk: You're in the heart of all of MUNI w/ J-Church & N-Judah Lines on the surface before heading underground; plus the "F-Line' of historic streetcars on Market...and Church Street Station (K-Ingleside, L-Zoo, M-Line, T-Third, S-Castro Shuttle) underground...
