Not sure what the other 2 states are unless Alabama is one of them.  It can not be understated that a factor that we do NOT have a auto plant much less a Toyota plant is another factor that may be in our favor. 2 More US Senators to fight for you.  Toyota has plants in TX, KY, MS, and IN and an engine plant in WV and AL.  Plus many Toyota suppliers are already in NC or nearby states like SC and TN.  I hope all these black helicopters circling the plant site means it is in the top 3 and will be the one. It is NC's time.

It is our time. We won't know for sure until Toyota makes its announcement. Its not a done deal because we were in the top 3 or 2 for the Mercedes Benz plant that would have been built in Mebane (the border of the Triad and Triangle) That plant went to Alabama because they had a better incentives package. This time we need to make an offer Toyota can't refuse. However there has certainly been a lot more activity surrounding the Greensboro-Randolph mega site than there was for Mebane some years ago so maybe thats a good sign.

It appears that North Carolina and in particular the Greensboro Randolph megasite may be the frontrunner for the Toyota/Mazda electric car plant as more and more states are eliminated.  In addition to the national attention of the Greensboro area winning this facility, it would bring 4,000 high paying jobs and thousands more indirectly. The plant is expected to be open by 2021.

"North Carolina officials touted the Randolph site for an array of major industrial plants, including Airbus, Mercedes and Volvo projects, but were never able to land a factory.
“That site has been the bridesmaid for several trophy projects,” Boyd said, adding that Toyota-Mazda probably leaned toward North Carolina in part because they have no operations in the state. Locating a plant there would help cement relations with the state’s congressional delegation."

According to Bloomberg, Toyota has narrowed the states down to two and that's North Carolina and Alabama.

If the Greensboro megasite is selected, maybe Toyota/Mazda research operations can be set up at Gateway University Research Park and collaborate with NC A&T, a major engineering university, and UNCG.

High paying Advanced/high-tech manufacturing will replace the old textile manufacturing jobs the area had been known for for decades. 4,000 jobs would be a huge victory for the Greensboro area and the Triad which would include thousands more jobs from suppliers moving to the area.

I think it is NC's time for an auto manufacturing with our incentives and specifically this Greensboro site close to Honda and able to draw from a labor force from the NC Charlotte suburbs through Triad all the way over to western edges of Raleigh Durham area.  The fact we have no major auto plant is in our favor and think of it political 2 more Senators fighting for your company.

Its been reported that 3 of the 4 mega sites in North Carolina are no longer in the running for the Toyota-Mazda plant which only leaves the Greensboro-Randolph mega site

http://www.wral.com/report-nc-a-finalist-for-toyota-mazda-car-plant/17114082/

"The other three mega-sites are near Siler City and Moncure in Chatham County and east of Rocky Mount in Edgecombe County. Jim Crawford, chairman of the Chatham County Commission, on Tuesday night said that the sites near Siler City and Moncure are no longer in the running for the plant, but they have submitted a bid for the new Amazon headquarters."

And then there was one. Rocky Mount area site is out which leaves the Greensboro-Randolph megasite the lone site left. Its also been the only site that has seen a lot of activity over the past month with black helicopters hovering over the site and buses going into the site with tents for meetings.

For the first time, Greensboro is mentioned as a contender for the Amazon H2 headquarters on a major news network.

CNBC ranks North Carolina number 1 for the Amazon headquarters, Charlotte, Greensboro/High Point and Raleigh were mentioned as contenders. If this prediction were true guess which area it would go... Lol the Triad being in the middle if they are looking at the metros as one region as mentioned in the business journal. Regardless of CNBC ranking, I still think its a longshot. But to hear Greensboro/High Point even mentioned in regards to the Amazon headquarters on a major tv network is kind of stunning. Again its still a long shot but the fact that Greensboro was mentioned on a major news network proves the idea isn't rediculous.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/20/these-cities-may-win-war-for-amazons-new-headquarters.html

The analysis gives high grades to a number of southern cities, including Atlanta, Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro-High Point, North Carolina.

No one can say NC did not go all out for the Toyota Mazda plant but the pull of the existing supply chain nearby was too much for NC.  Toyota has an engine plant very close to this Alabama site.  https://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/news/2018/01/10/commerce-secretary-n-c-offered-more-than-1-5.html?ana=e_clt_bn&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1515623323&j=79482731

From what I read, it sounds like Alabama was going to be the choice all along. Toyota/Mazda decided to pit the most desperate state against Alabama in a leverage move to get the most incentives out of Alabama. But in the end, it didn't matter what Alabama ended up making as their final offer. As long as it was something of a good faith amount, they were ALWAYS going to Alabama it seems.

Another Piedmont Triad ranks in a list for Amazon HQ2. Greensboro was on CNBC's list now Winston-Salem is on Forbes list. Charlotte and Raleigh were not on this list.

There is speculation that Boston may win the prize.  There is news reporting that Amazon plans to lease 500, 000 square feet at first of office space in that city.  The plan for Amazon HQ2 also calls for an intial 500, 000 square feet.

I would give this a 80% chance or more this 1000 job project will land in the Triad somewhere probably at this Greensboro site.  Right now Publix serves all its NC and VA and most of  SC stores from Atlanta and that doesn't work well with groceries.  at first I thought this would land in the Charlotte area but when they expanded into VA it needed to be further north.

https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2018/03/13/publix-seeks-incentives-for-1-000-job-distribution.html?ana=e_ae_set1&s=article_du&ed=2018-03-13&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1520976474&j=80476331

Look at their locations in NC now they are getting bigger and bigger in the Charlotte area.  https://hello.publix.com/locations/

Looks like 1 Million sq ft Amazon warehouse maybe coming to Kernersville business park which is actually in Guilford county.  Couple of stories about it

https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2018/05/31/could-incentives-eventually-be-in-play-for-an.html?ana=e_ae_set1&s=article_du&ed=2018-05-31&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1527887504&j=81888411

This would be Amazon's first distribution center outside of the Charlotte area and the one in Durham county.

Medical device maker is moving 650 jobs from other locations in WS to the old Whittaker cigarette plant an 850,000 sq ft plant.   That is great for Winston as the plant was donated to WS and the proceeds can be used for other projects.   Winston has completely reinvented itself and it was easy to do but they are doing it.  https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2018/06/12/medical-device-company-to-move-650-employees-to.html?ana=e_ae_set1&s=article_du&ed=2018-06-12&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1528835798&j=82105371

VF Leaving NC

This is definitely a blow to the area, but I think it is a smart decision to have the mountainwear apparel in the Denver area. It does look like the company is being split up between Mountainwear and the other entities, so it could be a small consolation for the area.

I think if you split it up in two, you still have a F500 company, but we shall see.

Body blow???  That is laughable.  You seem to celebrate any negative or bad news as it relates to NC in Charlotte Raleigh Durham and now Greensboro as I have seen  your negative posts at all 3 UP sites in the state.

Yes VF is moving their headquarters out of Greensboro  (of the now smaller company after they spin off the jeans division) but it sounds like only the top execs.  Not only will the jeans spinoff company Lee and Wrangler be based in Greensboro 85 people will move from  Kansas City to Greensboro.

From the Triad Business Journal https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2018/08/13/greensboro-leaders-focus-on-silver-lining-in-vf.html?ana=e_ae_set1&s=article_du&ed=2018-08-13&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1534190283&j=83242211

From the article:

""“I think all in all, the good news is that you see VF recommitting to Greensboro for its future," Christensen said. "That to me is an exciting thing. They’re leaving 1,300 employees in Greensboro. To me, that signals a strong commitment to this community. That shows the value that they put in this community and the caliber of employees they find in this community.” ""

""A VF spokeswoman said Monday afternoon that VF will keep in Greensboro leaders "for certain corporate functions such as finance, supply chain and global business technologies and other areas." Of VF's 1,390 employees in Greensboro, 630 work for VF's corporate office and 760 work for the jeans brands, the spokeswoman said.""

You know why certain corporate functions will be kept in Greensboro?   Greensboro is substantially cheaper place to operate from than the Denver metro area. Denver's housing prices at least 2x as high as Greensboro's maybe 3x as high.   This is the top execs and some executive level functions leaving.

I do think the sky isn't necessarily falling in this case.

Yes, the loss of a corporate HQ is sad, but it is true that leaving behind such a substantial employment base is a good sign.

Also, judging by the revenues of both the denim/non-activewear division, it still looks like a F500 company may still have an HQ in the city. I am always shocked to see how strong the Triad is as a F500 center. With Qorvo, BB&T, LabCorp, and now this new company spinoff, it looks like things are gonna be ok.
