Rapid growth in Baldwin County has led to an increasing crime problem. While the state of Alabama saw a 3% reduction in the crime rate for 2006, the crime rate in Baldwin County increased by a whopping 20%. There was a marked increase in theft and other property crime in Baldwin County, and a moderate increase in violent crime.

Looks like the golden years of Baldwin county are up. More crime, crashing home values, and endless sprawl. Its really sad. Mobile county is finally on the up swing....its just sad that suburban baldwin county is going down hill. The Metro needs to stay strong. They need planning and they need it fast!!

Some positive news:

Fairhope's Planning and Zoning Commission rejected a developer's request for an exception to the 30,000 sq ft cap for a grocery or retail store. The developer had wanted a "big box" grocery store to anchor the Village North project at US 98 and Section Street. The city council will still get to vote on this, though, as early as January.

The 192 foot tall Apalachee condominium tower project, on hold in Daphne since 2005, was granted another one year extension to begin work. Developers are hoping that construction and insurance costs will moderate this year so that construction can begin.

The Daphne city council approved a smoking ban, banning smoking in all Daphne restaurants but allowing it in bars, private clubs, tobacco shops and designated smoking rooms in hotels.

Publix will open a second coastal Alabama store in Fairhope. A 54,340 sq ft store will anchor the Shoppes at Fairhope Village on the east side of U.S. 98, across from the "Welcome to Fairhope" sign. The first coastal Alabama Publix is in Orange Beach.

The 140,000 sq ft Bass Pro store should be ready to open by late August, the first anchor store to open at Spanish Fort Town Center. It will be followed by a 105,000 sq ft JC Penney, a 98,000 sq ft Kohl's, and Circuit City. The 800,000 sq ft mixed-use commercial center will also include apartments, restaurants, other retailers and two hotels - Courtyard by Marriott and Fairfield Inn & Suites.
