Pittsburgh isn't the only city with a newly built or on the drawing board children's hospital, they are saying ours will be the best in some ways though--at least initially until the next best one is built. The University "owns" Children's but they have their own board kinda like a subsidary that is 51% owned by another "financing" company. Lately the University has scaled back some of the room count and has scaled back the research center, the Children's chairman blew the whistle now its being fought out in the newspapers, but from what I've heard the two sides are making peace and only scaling back on some intangibles like parking, the generating plant etc. no service or medical related infrastructure.

UPDATE!

Seems that UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is upping it's commitment to what will be one of the world's first "green" hospitals to the tune of $82 million.

Pittsburgh Biz Journal reports that it is going mainly to infrastructure and lab space for the clinical/research areas as well as an expanded role for the hospital space:

"Added to the plans were an 800-space staff parking garage, expanded faculty and administrative and clinical areas, onsite daycare center, fitness center and outdoor garden. What's more, two floors in a planned pediatric research building, originally planned to be vacant for the immediate future, will now be finished."
