Richland County is in negotiations with an unnamed manufacturer that would bring $970 million in investment and more than 1,800 new jobs to the Columbia area.

The deal, if inked, would mark the largest investment in the county’s history and one of the largest economic development projects in South Carolina in 2022.

Richland County Council voted Nov. 15 to begin negotiating tax incentives with the company, known for now as “Project Golden Eagle,” after talking about the deal during a closed session.

The city of Columbia also discussed the project in a closed-door committee meeting a week earlier. The type of manufacturer and location of the development is not publicly known.

What incentives are being offered are not yet publicly known and County Council members declined comment about the identity of the company.

Orion Performance Compounds, Inc., a manufacturer of highly engineered thermoplastic compounds, will invest $13 million to establish operations in Kershaw County, creating up to 54 new jobs.

A new $50 million investment from Borealis, a Canadian food technology company, will enable Saluda-based Palmetto Gourmet Foods to expand operations and increase its workforce to 650 employees over the next year.

Chick Fil-A Supply, a wholly owned subsidiary of Chick-Fil-A, will invest $80 million to establish a new distribution center in Lexington County. The new facility will be located in the Saxe Gotha Industrial Park and create 165 new jobs.

How many employees does BMW in Greer have? Just curious. Seems the two projects may be similar in scope and size.

BMW employs 11,000 at their plant in Greer.

This is where we may have shot ourselves in the foot by not expanding the convention center and adding more hotels near the arena. I know there are one or two on the way, but I'd hate to miss out on the economic boon of having them in Cola this month, due to not having enough hotels. Fingers  crossed.  https://www.thestate.com/news/local/article286739585.html
