When's the last time the Triad has had snow on the ground on Christmas? I wanna say 1998? WSJ and the Weather Channel are predicitng frozen precip on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Its still to far in the future to be certain tho.

well I know Greensboro hasnt had a true white christmas since the late 1960s so a few generations around here have never really seen a white Christmas. There have been a year or two in the 1990s where there were flurries on Christmas day but hardly a white Christmas. I hope it happens this time and doesnt turn into a sleet or freezing rain event.

This is not the thread for this, but I have a question. I was recently routed by Mapquest thru Winston-Salem on my way to Durham from Nashville, because of the I-40 landside. Haven't seen Winston-Salem for 20 years or more. What is the Domed topped Skyscraper. I laughed when I saw it. I have often heard skyscrapers refered to as phallic symbols, but that certainly didn't try not to elicit that comparison, as it stands so proudly erect. I like the photo above of it at night and kind of like it, but by day, it is kind of funny. Please take no offense, I was wondering who it was built for.

That's Wachovia Center. It was Wachovia's corporate headquarters from the mid-90's until 2001 when the bank merged with First Union in Charlotte.

I've heard jokes about the Wachovia Tower too. I've heard people say Winston-Salem has the biggest you know what in the Triad (Its the tallest building in the Triad). It resembles the AEGON Center in Louisville, Kentucky

yeah there are some great architectural 'curiosities' in the triad. cesar pelli's wachovia tower is just lacking a climatic flourish; like a fountain on top would make it complete!

here is an aerial of Greensboro's skyline back in the late 1960s. notice that Greene St had a row of historic buildings like Elm Street. The brick mid-rise to the left of the old Wachovia Building was the original O'Henry Hotel and the tall brick building on the far right of the picture was the King Cotton Hotel.

War Memorial Stadium - originally is was suppose to be a football stadium and it was never fully completed. But eventually it served as a baseball stadium until 2005 when a new ballpark was built downtown. The design of War Memorial was inspired by the Los Angeles Coliseum which was built 3 years earlier.

The old Guilford hotel in Greensboro....looks like it was located at the site of the Woolworth store, now the International Civil Rights Museum. Beautiful architecture. Its a shame downtown doesn't have any examples of this style which has European characteristics.

Vintage photo of Cone Mills and a string of textile plants. You can see Greensboro's skyline in the background. Clearly this was an era when the King Cotton Hotel was still standing. You can see the mill villages in the foreground and many of those homes still exist today. Today's State Street Station was at one time a shopping village for the mill villages. Today Its an upscale retail village.

In the middle part of this video (starting at 0:23), S. Elm Street looks really nice! Glad to see Greensboro being used in commercials like this.

Here is an interesting fact about the Jefferson Standard Building in Greensboro which was built in 1923. The building was actually modeled after the Equitable Building in New York City with its "U" shaped architecture.

Greensboro photos

The downtown skyscraper boom in 1989. Greensboro's skyline was littered with construction cranes. Another big crane, not visible in the photo was used to build the Renaissance Plaza Tower. Maybe one day we'll see all those cranes again.

coliseum expansion in 1993

1,016 room Sheraton Four Season/ Joseph S Koury Convention Center. It was the largest hotel between Atlanta and Washington DC until the Cherokee casino hotel in Cherokee, NC quietly surpassed it with 1,100 rooms. The Sheraton Four Seasons is still the largest "convention hotel" between Atlanta and Washington and the tallest hotel in the Carolinas.

Center Pointe condos in downtown Greensboro

Carolina Theatre built in 1927 was the first public air conditioned building in North Carolina. In 1927 it was called the "showplace of the Carolinas". Today it serves as a community theater and performing arts center. Some nights you can watch old classic movies here like Gone with The Wind and The Wizard of Oz.. The building almost became a porno palace in the 1970s.
