Barely a month after launching its service in Montgomery, Florida-based DayJet announced it is expanding operations -- making the Montgomery Regional Airport a DayPort, the company's equivalent of a hub. The DayJet air taxi service uses Eclipse 500 jets.

The airport had a 12 percent drop in passengers in November 2008 compared to 2007. Passenger use is down about 5.2 percent so far this year.

Merged Delta and Northwest operations will go into effect in mid-March and Montgomery may lose service to Memphis as a result. A new destination may be added if Memphis is dropped.

Eighty-six percent of flights were on time in October, roughly matching the national rate. On-time arrivals continue to be much better than before the governor visited with Delta executives.

Im late to the game here. I have read all of these. HSVTiger shows stats from the Huntsville airport. I have a dumb question. If most flyers drive to Bham or Atl in our area for cheaper flights how come Huntsville's airport has expanded so much? Seems that the proximity of Bhams international airport should have kept Huntville's down for so long. Not saying they dont deserve or need such a large airport but it is now a hub for all of south Tenn, northwest Georgia as well as North Ala. I mean Huntsville metro is 500,000+ right? Thats amazing that it has exploded in cargo shipping. What is the factor that caused this to happen versus other airports not just in Alabam?

It's not an easy answer, but a few points.

A very large number of government and high tech business flyers, this is the majority. 25,000 people work in Reserach Park alone, another approx 17,000 on Redstone Arsenal.

A VERY aggressive and well run airport authority. The airport is self supporting, it serves 18 counties

This did not happen over night. It began 30 years ago and has slowly evolved into the modern facility today. It continues with an aggressive expansion plan aquiring land

and expanding the cargo/passenger facilities. The cargo business was a vision by very forward thinking individuals 15 years ago.

What really helped cargo:

In 2005-2006 the west runway 18R/36L was lengthened to 12,600ft in a $31m project making it the second longest in south-east USA, however there are now plans to lengthen the two runways, to build a new runway and also for the construction of a new terminal building.

The new 12,600ft long runway allows Boeing 747s to be turned around in two hours and be fueled up for direct Asia-Alabama flights for cargo and passengers.

(Huntsville really does have daily international flights but it is cargo only)

The key was having smart visionary people in the right place and not giving up on the dream.

American Eagle Airlines will open up at the airport to connect Montgomery with Dallas International. This is confirmed. We will have a connection west of the Mississippi again fter loosing Continental which gave us the only hub connection west of the Mississippi. The new mayor-elect had nothing to do with it. It was in the works before his election. Good job airport authority.
