When travelers at Metro Airport head to Detroit along I-94, local and state leaders want them to remember more than a giant tire, overgrown weeds, unsafe left-side exits and potholes.

That may change now that work has begun on a $66.5 million freeway makeover that will provide easier access, extensive landscaping and a new gateway bridge similar in shape to the St. Louis arch.

At stake, leaders say, are visitor impressions of the nation
