10,000 new jobs coming to BAFB/Bossier City?

Naturally. I saw this coming long before the article and you probably did as well. Anytime something this big comes out, other military areas are going to try to get in on it.

The biggest benefits to locating it here, though, would be the $50 million each from the city and the state, as well as the fact that the base for this operation is already located here.

The Nebraska site does sound like a good fit as well, but I truly believe (and hope) that what this area is offering will be enough to help them decide locate it here. This is a huge deal, no doubt others will want in on it. But since we were the first area to jump on it and have thus far shown how badly we want it, I believe the odds are stacked in our favor.

This will definitely be something to watch closely.

Congrats to Bossier and the rest of the SBC area! I know your head is reeling at all the prospects.

I wouldn't expect them to actually vote in favor of it. It was a test vote, so had that been a real vote at that given moment they would have voted it down.

Damn them. If they do vote it down for real, I hope they enjoy the crappy, uneducated state they have helped to create.

As has been mentioned, the only hope we have is that a few of those nay votes can be swayed in the right direction. The number was so overwhelming, to be just a couple of votes shy is extremely disheartening.

As I said I don't see the votes changing... but boy do I hope I'm wrong. This issue further proves that some people simply do not want to see this state progress. I remember years ago thinking of Alabama as a backwoods state where everyone walked around barefoot and mated with siblings. (to anyone from Alabama, believe me I don't think this about your state anymore) Over the past few years, though, Alabama has progressed amazingly and now they probably view us as the ones who walk around barefoot and mate with siblings.

Is it me, or does it seems like the rest of state has a jealousy complex or something when it comes to economic development in our region? Neglecting the completion of I-49... check. Oh, 10,000 new white collar jobs and a developing a new industry... yeah, let's shoot that down. I'm willing to bet if this was a I-10 project, i.e., located on or nearby I-10, ... no problems.

Metlife, I tend to agree with you and I hate that. I'm all for statewide development... the new casino resort complex in Baton Rouge, the steel mill that could have been built in south Louisiana, I-49, and this project. This project is JUST as important as any major development, and not just for Shreveport-Bossier or Barksdale, but for the entire state!!

I so badly want to move our state forward, but in order to do so we need some politicians removed. The plan is great, and it would be irresponsible for anyone in Louisiana to oppose it. This brings me to once again wonder if our state legislators actually do read everything they're voting on. I would go as far as to say that quite a few do not.

By the way, speaking of I-49, I sure wish I were an important voice in state politics because I would stress the importance of focusing I-49 on the inner-city area of Shreveport rather than cheaply tying the freeway in with the existing I-220 and LA-3132 freeways. How irresponsible is that? So our politicians would rather watch Shreveport sprawl further west instead of focusing their interest on the inner-city? We have a golden opportunity with this freeway to take back our inner-city, especially around Allendale which would be split up. Much like I-20 to the south, I-49 would also serve as a visible western boundary of the city's Central Business District.

I've heard something interesting. Now, whether it is true or not, I don't know. I was speaking with a home builder and was told that a 4-Star General has bought some properties in the area. Why would a 4-Star General, not from here, be buying property in our area? The assumption is that they are investment properties. Why the investment? Hummmm..... Again, I have no first hand knowledge and we were totally speculating. I, for one, hope it is very true.

That IS interesting! Sounds like the general is expecting a housing demand boost in the near future. Hmmm, I wonder what might give him that idea!!?

I wouldn't say the rest of the state is jealous, I'd say the rest of the state just doesn't know what's going on up in Shreveport. Of course I can't speak for everyone or any legislators, but it seems that for most people down here, "Louisiana" is divided horizontally south of Alexandria, and Shreveport and the rest of NW Louisiana is Texas. It's a shame, but it's been that way forever it seems. New Orleans is New Orleans, Baton Rouge is Baton Rouge, Lafayette is Lafayette, south Louisiana is Louisiana, and NW Louisiana is Texas. Though I always like to keep track of what's going on up in Shreveport as I would go through the area on my way to Texarkana 6 or 7 times a year before Katrina, and I imagine I'll be back to doing that again soon enough. Most people, however, just seem to have no connection to NW Louisiana, and the culture of that area is so different compared to the culture(s) of south Louisiana, that to those same people, it doesn't just feel like a completely different state, it is a completely different state.

I agree, Nate. I've always viewed north and south Louisiana as separate states... not because I like one over the other (I like south Louisiana as well) but because they do really seem separate. I-49 was the beginning of the "bridge" between north and south, and I hope to see more "bridges" built between the north and south parts of the state.

As far as Baton Rouge goes, the majority of our legislators are from south Louisiana and they're IN Baton Rouge, which further separates them from our region. The few legislators representing our region have to fight hard to be recognized in Baton Rouge and they're fighting some major resistance: Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette especially because there is also a lot going on in those metro areas.

Well I am glad I-49 happened! I too believe it help connect(bridge) North & South Louisiana in more ways than one.

I can remember I-49 being completed except for in Alexandria. It seemed like it took forever to complete that stretch; but there is alot of elevated roadway. The Pineville Exressway is also very nice.

It did seem a world away in Pineville/Alexandria from BR when I stayed there a couple weeks ago.
