Editorial: Judicious delay

It is encouraging news that Chief Justice Frank Williams and the leaders of the Rhode Island General Assembly have backed off from building a new $71 million courthouse of dubious necessity in the middle of a financial crisis.

I fail to see the need for a new courthouse. The new Kent County Courthouse is beautiful and convenient, but Providence County doesn't need a new courthouse. Transferring cases out to a court in Smithfield would be an added burden on the lawyers (myself included) who maintain their offices in Providence/Pawtucket etc. and their clients. I don't find the current Superior/Supreme Court building to be overcrowded or inconvenient. Parking isn't ideal, but it exists.
