It has some great neighbors. Across the street is this newly renovated space:

This is a perfect spot for a grocery store. Of course Spartan will say they need to be in a 50k plus sf building, have a huge parking lot and have a minimum vehicle count on a major road way. This is a densely populated area, and the income level can't be that low. If a Family Fare or D & W had been there when I lived a block and a half a way I would have done my shopping there. I would have walked and saved a parking spot for someone who really needed it. What would it take for a grocery store to be successful in the location?

It would take a lot of work to make that building barrier free. Think of all the classrooms and offices.

Spartan has some smaller prototypes that are in the range of 30k.

18K would be a bit small, parking is a bit short and the cars per day on the street is real light, for a full service grocery.

Well 311 State St is officially on the market.

The 320 State St building (directly across from 311 State St.) is actually being leased by St Mary's. It houses their Centralized Scheduling and Patient Registration departments

There is already a small grocery store on the corner of Madison, State, and Cherry. I used to live not even a block away from it but rarely went in there because it was so uninviting and didn't really look sanitary.

Clark's is more Liquor/Party store than grocery now.

It used to be a nice place 3 years ago. The former owners were really nice people too.

Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see a grocery open up on State to put Clark's under.

I'm pretty sure it was a grocery store at one time. One of those buildings was a grocery store (Clark's Food Market?) when I went to high school at the corner of Franklin & Madison. It lasted a number of years beyond that IIRC.
