Carnival Cruise Lines will replace the Holiday's sister ship -- the Jacksonville, Fla.-based Celebration -- with a larger vessel in September, raising hopes that Mobile will get a newer, larger ship as well. Local officials believe Mobile will have a new ship by next fall. Cruise demand remains strong in Mobile, with routine bookings at over 100 percent capacity.

Mobile's cruise port was named "Port of the Year" by Carnival Cruise Lines, based on feedback from customer comment cards. The city has been negotiating with Carnival on a new contract, which will go before the city council on Tuesday.

Just being named that alone should go a long way when Carnival is trying to decide where to put a new ship.

Mayor Sam Jones says the city plans to spend up to $3 million on a new gangway, anticipating a larger cruise ship will be berthed in Mobile soon. According to the Press-Register, industry observers have mentioned the Sensation, a Fantasy-class 2,050 passenger ship, as a likely candidate for Mobile.

Mobile is getting a new cruise ship! Carnival Cruise Lines is moving the Fantasy, a 2,056-passenger cruise ship, to Mobile in November 2009, Carnival Cruise Lines announced today. The Fantasy will go into dry dock in Mobile on September 6th for some major upgrades.

Carnival plans to add 6 and 7 day cruises from Mobile starting in May 2010, with Jamaica and Grand Cayman added as destinations. The Mobile City Council selected TEAM Ports & Maritime SL to design and build a $2.6 million gangway for the Fantasy ship that will replace the Holiday in November 2009.
