The park does look great. Thanks to basachs and the Friends group for their good work, and thanks to everyone who participated in the neighborhood cleanup last Saturday!

It was lovely being out there yesterday afternoon. The park was so green and clean, and there was the WBNA art event, soccer games, kids on the playground and a yoga class on the lawn. I must have run into 8 people I knew. I am seriously loving the park lately. Can't wait for the farmers' market to start up!

Just a heads up: the Board of Parks Commissioners has moved the meeting about the ball/dog field to 8:30am on Tuesday, May 8th at RWP Casino, NOT the 11th as it was originally. (The second meeting of neighbors about this issue was scheduled for Tueday night, but looks like Parks is beating us to the punch.) It's a bad time, but any and all who are concerned about the issue should be there at 8:30 on the spot to make sure to be present for the public comment period at the beginning of the meeting.

I am so annoyed. I was walking in Dexter Park and saw kids playing baseball and in between plays, tagging everything near the fence. They got the new solar powered compacting trashcans, the dog park sign, and the dispensers.

I ran over there and confronted the kids, who promptly said they would clean it up. Yeah right. I called the cops and the kids started walking away. I followed them for about 10 minutes, still no police, until they broke into a run and scattered.

When I got back to the park, three cops were dealing with a drunk in the park. I gave my report and descriptions of the kids, but it is doubtful they will be caught.....

Very frustrating since this morning we had a great turnout for mulching. We were able to mulch all the trees in the park, and it was looking so good and being used by a lot of people. Even the cops said it was the best it had looked in years.

This graffiti thing sucks.

Well, the Board of Parks Commissioners voted to keep the ball field as a dog park. There were a good number of neighbors present, advocating for both dog owners and ball players.

There was a bit of drama which I won't go into, except to say that Charles Pinning's dedication to this issue isn't helping those of us who want to see the field kept available for ball playing. I am also dissapointed in the Mayor and the Board of Commissioners that they chose not to table the decision pending further discussion. I think this arrangement is setting the stage for pretty bad neighborhood relations, and it just doesn't have to be that way. PM me if you want to know more of what I think about the whole thing.

Despite the outcome of the vote, conversations after the fact among neighbors - dog owners and non- indicated that the issue isn't closed. There's definitely still work to be done to make sure that both ball players and dog owners are accomodated. I remain impressed with (most) neighbors' commitment to neighborliness and accomodating each other's concerns. I just hope the dog park advocates also acknowledge that the issue isn't closed.

Kari from WBNA was there and indicated that they and the Friends if Dexter Park are going to keep the discussion open with Parks. I hope so, and I hope more of us neighbors remain committed to finding a better solution.

Also, there is still a neighborhood meeting scheduled for 6:30 this evening at the Hmong church. Voices of moderation would be very welcome.

It sounds like the neighbors are able to work this out amongst themselves, and maybe the silver lining of this divisive issue will be that more people will become involved as Friends of Dexter Training Ground. Sounds like the best route is for the neighbors to continue to work towards a best solution, then go back to the city and say, "this is what we decided, make it so."

Charles Pinning sent out this bizzare email in which he seems to infer that Basachs doesnt like children because of his UP post about grafiti. Its all very very strange and over the top. I don't know Basachs personally but I know that he has put in a LOT of work to make Dexter Park a better place for the whole community (and that includes the kids).

Um, I dont hate children. I dont have any, but that does not mean I dont like them. Just for the record.

Today's performance was very odd, overly dramatic, and did a disservice to the baseball cause. The Friends Group will continue to talk with parks about how to accomodate all needs.

Jim, technically it is a dog park and you cannot play baseball. Why anyone would want to play baseball in a dog park is another issue. I doubt anyone would kick children out although i did hear some that someone did. It is not me that did that, although I also hear that I dislike children...

However, if the dog park is to be improved into a real dog park then it will not look like much of a baseball field. Which is why I really do want to keep the discussion going and open on a even keel before anything is done.

I really do want to find common ground and come up with good solutions. However, i do not think common ground can be found with the current leadership of baseball side. i was encouraged to hear so many rational, thoughtful opinions today at the Park Meeting and hope to talk more with those people. I could not attend last weeks meeting due to being away on business and I am being kept out of the loop on meetings. I will be going to tonight's meeting. As the head of the Friends Group for the park, i want to hear from all sides and work on solutions that preserve the dog space and recreation space for children.

Yes, it would be crappy, but here's an idea, how about not letting it escalate that far? How about having a touch more faith in your neighbor's and their ability to get along?

And, I'd just like to suggest that you do read all the regulations before you start spinning wild tales (pun intended) about what may come.

I wish they would be a little more balanced. The headline is "Residents want Baseball Field, not Dog Park". We heard from both sides today. I think it is safe to say the community wants both, and people are working towards that goal. Not as newsworthy a headline I guess.

Yeah thats a tough decision, I mean living down the street in a loft building we have no property so its been great to bring the dog over to run around but at the same time, I have been there twice when a group of kids were waiting (very patiently) for the last dogs to leave so they could play baseball...its a tough one to call
