It was good to see everyone, although I was almost incapacitated with the stomach flu.

I apologize for having missed meeting you.  With what you say you came down with, showing up must have meant some real "intestinal fortitude".

[i know ─ tacky, but I just had to "let" that out  ]

First and foremost, I want to wish everyone a Merppy ChristmaKwanzAnnukah (I think I covered the main ones) and a truly happy new year to come.

Next Saturday the 4th of January we will meet at Pinewood Social, 10am. Parking is abundant, close, and free - which will be quite the change from our normal meeting place. I am hammering out with them to make sure they can accommodate us and there are no catches, however if I can get a good idea as to who will be able to make it that would be great.

Happy Holidays all... and see you in the new year...

Provence it is like usual. William and I got the feeling, they  (Pinewood) would not be too receptive to us having a forum meet there. It's expensive, (coffee refill is a $1.08), a bit snooty, full of privileged rich kids, and there is no large table for us. When William  and  I were in there with a small exception, the age demographic was 30 and under. Honestly, I don't think we would spend enough money for them. They certainly would frown on us sitting there for a couple of hours. When we were there at least two people in 30 minutes walked up to us trying to sell us something else.

These are the guys that own The Catbird Seat, Paradise Park, and two other places. The place is beautiful, but not for the low spender! Provence it is on January 4th.

Barbara and I went back on Christmas Eve for lunch and they basically talked us out of eating there. Not sure if it was the way we were dressed or not. Granted they were closing in less than an hour, but it seemed like we were "not the clientele they wanted."

The "kids" that were in there were all dressed expensively, and the hostess would not let me in the place, including to show Barbara the coffee shop and the bowling lounge, without being escorted.

I won't go back.

Sorry you had an unfortunate experience. When I went in, the manager came over, greeted me, and gave me his card so I could call if we wanted to meet there.

They were nice when William and I were in there. Max gave me a tour, it's just too expensive, and I doubt our group will feel comfortable in there. I bought a coffee and a muffin, and with tip it was $10! $40 to bowl for an hour, are you serious?

Maybe if I had a $200 outfit on and a pair of $200 shoes, I may fit in! My Ford did not fit in well with all of the new Porche's, BMW's, and Mercedes in the parking lot driven by 20 year olds from Vanderbilt!

That's just my .02 for what it is worth. The bottom line is the demographic they are going for is the under 30 wealthy youth with high disposable income who don't mind paying $10 for a coffee and muffin, and then another dollar for a refill. I would rather get an entire pot of coffee, full breakfast, and refills at hermitage Cafe for $6.

That would be a perfect location for a forum meet on Rolling Mill Hill. The Hermitage Cafe.

I do agree that the demographic is very targeted, but that's what you expect with who the owners are. Either, I'm not going to knock the place - they did a great job and I look forward to eating what looks to be an amazing brunch there.

That all said, we will maintain Provence as the meetup location for next Saturday, the 4th of January, at 10am.

Daniel, you might approach the manager(s) and owner, if you have the opportunity, with an "intellectual cattle prod" to help "steer" the establishment into a more broadly amenable reception (in the event that you might be capable of conferring such a softening suggestion).

All that I can conclude from the Pinewood price structure (for "gold" coffee) is the intent to weed out mongrels like me, in deference to the pedigrees.  The premium, inflated, demanding rate of the streetcar-barn space leasing is one thing, but my gut feeling is that Pinewood is spreading its feathers for the Rolling Mill - Rutledge Hill dwellers and those who frequent the locale (and to weed out riff-raff like me).  Not even a surprise to me that daddies have bought a batch of them flats to qualify their Vandy kids for in-state tuition, and/or to keep 'em pampered and protected from the mundane life of the dorms, in speculation that the parents or their kids can turn over the property for a profit in 4 or 5 years, once darlings "Jodie" and "Jessica" land jobs back home.

I also would  think that the owners are banking on K-V Blvd. as a chute to feed the transient clientele from the Hilton, Omni, and Renaissance. In all, they likely are targeting a rather exclusive range of patronage, rather than a general one.

I'll shoot for Provence that Sat.  But Daniel, don't take it as personal our reaction to your suggestion; it's not a bad idea to try out a different flop now and then.

KS, some of the "non-naturalized" forum readers (and lurkers) might naively question-mark what you mean, but I surely haven't forgotten.  That's one reason I never have let anyone talk me into returning to that place in over 20 years, even though I live only about 3 and some odd miles from the joint.  It was an easy walk-in, though, when I used to go there during the mid-'60s when the parents of the current owner (a year behind me in high school) used to run the Pantry.

You know Vandy has been out of school almost the entire month, right?

Maybe it's just that there are a lot of people, many of whom are young, that make pretty good money in this city!

I stand corrected, samsonh.

I need to maintain a level of objectivity here, lest, on a regular basis, the "lot of people" might include you, or even me, although the latter would be a stretch of my imagination (beyond its elastic limit).  If the business does weather downtown's fluctuating, often surging and unpredictably receding clientele patronage patterns, then another "secure", stable asset will have been reined in for the urban core ─ a good thing.

The town perhaps could stand to become a bit more granular in stratifying that type of scene, quite a way from being considered as saturated in this county.

So are we meeting tomorrow at the Library, Pinewood, Pancake Pantry, or what?  Please confirm.  I am canvassing my neighborhood to gauge support for a conservation zoning overlay expansion just about every minute of daylight when I am not working.  I have over 500 property owners to speak to and follow up with regarding their support for a potential expansion.  I can stop by tomorrow but can't stay too long.
