2008 Bassmaster Classic Coming to Greenville and Lake Hartwell!!!

February 22-24, 2008

Hey! Now here is something to get excited about! This is the SUPERBOWL, the WORLD SERIES, the TOUR DE FRANCE, the STANLEY CUP, the NBA FINALS, etc. of Professional Bass Fishing and has an international audience and participation. Folks, this is HUGE!

[*]Lake Hartwell to be used for the tournament.

[*]Televised weigh-ins to be conducted at the Bi-Lo Center.

[*]The Tournament exposition will be at the Carolina First Center.

[*]The Women

This is huge! Another positive tourism development. Another step towards increasing our tourism industry in the Upstate and getting some great exposure to lure in more tourists. :thumbsup:

We've got the Super Bowl of Cycling, and now the Super Bowl of Fishing. GREAT! :shades:

The weigh in is in G'ville 'cause it's the host city of the tournament. Anderson is too cheap to pay the kinds of fees to get the event. It requires a pretty big municipal contribution to be named.

This is a great event for the upstate. I read that when it was in Pennsylvania that 100,000 people lined the banks and bridges of the host lake. Wouldn't that be amazing? :shades:

Just got back from a weekend on Lake Hartwell with friends and the discussion of the Bassmaster Classic came up. None of us are fishermen, so I have a few questions about the tournament works.

During the tournament, is the lake closed to all boating except those in the tournament? Do the guys in the tournament fish the entire lake (anywhere they choose) or are there marked boundaries and they fish only in those areas? And this last one will probably sound real stupid.....do they fish simply for the fish naturally found in the lake, or is there a stock of sizable fish released (marked with prize markings) in the lake prior to the event?

Just curious....we were all sitting on a boat drinking, watching some guys fish and realized none of us knew jack squat about fishing. :rolleyes:

It seems that the 2008 Bassmaster Classic is still going to happen in Greenville. In fact, if the Greenville CVB can raise $500,000 soon, it looks like ESPN will choose us to host the 2009 Bassmaster Classic as well. Article from The Greenville News:

I think this all sounds good, although it is interesting that ESPN would go ahead and commit to returning to Greenville in 2009 before seeing how the 2008 tournament goes. :lol: With all the economic impact this tournament supposedly has, I am all for doing what is necessary to get it back here.

I noticed yesterday that the City of Clemson is preparing for the event. Banners are hung on light poles all the way down College Avenue welcoming and advertising the event! They look to have been sponsored by the SC tourism people (whoever runs the "Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places" thing)

I took my daughter to the weigh-ins this afternoon. It was really neat seeing the enthusiastic crowd that turned out to see the women's champion (Judy Wong) crowned and to see the field cut from 50 to 25 for the men. One of the contestants in particular, Stephen Browning from Hot Springs, Arkansas, upon obviously missing the cut declined an opportunity to speak about his approach when asked to describe what he did to account for the weather change today. Instead, he said that he did nothing special today and wanted to take a few minutes to say that he is absolutely amazed by the City of Greenville and how the people of the Upstate have turned out in huge numbers for this tournament. He said he had been doing this for fourteen years and had never seen anything like it anywhere. He was the first of many that commented on how great the city and people have been here, even if the weather has been a bit difficult with which to contend. :yahoo:

If y'all haven't been to the weigh-in or the expo yet, you should go. Admission to both are absolutely FREE. There's free stuff (thunder stix, seat cushions, etc.) being handed out. Most of the women and most of the the 25 men that didn't make the cut today will be at the expo tomorrow. The weigh-in should be exciting as well. If you can't make it in person, watch it on ESPN tonight at 10:00pm. :thumbsup:
