The existing building is too big for the existing site because it was made bigger after the roof collapse. It was retrofitted into the smaller footprint of the original 12,000 seat arena. It would easily fit on the site of the photo and also accomodate an outdoor plaza.

The current arena is a tiny footprint in comparison to all the new arenas. I hate the new arenas; they're not as steep and stretch out further. I love the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, every seat is on top of the action... except the seats at the very top when they added the club seats, those seats really sucked. I hope if a new arena is built it can have all the new amenities but still keep the feeling of the older arenas like the civic center, old Boston garden, and Chicago stadium.
