RSA Judicial Building

WSFA ran a story about tonight's public forum. Interestingly, preservationists seem to be more interested in the view up Dexter Avenue and not diminishing the stature of the Capitol than in preserving the old building. A compromise solution that would be a win for all sides is clearly doable, if RSA will participate in discussions.

Another interesting development is that legislators may get involved in the issue during the upcoming session.

A standing-room only crowd of concerned citizens packed the public forum last night. Ron Blount of RSA said that there is about a 30 day window of opportunity to meet with RSA and try to work out a compromise. Hopefully such a meeting will happen and will be successful in modifying this project.

Phillip Rawls of the Associated Press wrote an article about how the building may destroy the view of the historic Alabama Capitol building.

Critics say new building hides historic Alabama Capitol

Dr. Bronner brags about the RSA spending $900 million downtown over the past 20 years. "Without these buildings, your downtown would have been dead 20 years ago," said Bronner. Unfortunately, downtown is more dead than it was 20 years ago. The real question is whether RSA's investments have actually improved the vibrancy and street life of downtown. I hope that RSA will begin to play by the rules and participate in a true revitalization of downtown. It's not too late.

David Bronner discussed his vision for downtown Montgomery with the Montgomery Advertiser.

It would have been a lot easier and a lot cheaper just to flatten it and rebuild. It probably would have saved us about $15 million-$20 million, but I probably wouldn't have built there then. There are a lot of places with better space and nicer views.
Then why don't you tear down the old judicial building and build something that fits within the city code, or build somewhere else where the height is more appropriate?

This post is a little late but here a video about a new media company that will move it's headquarters to the new judicial building in a year once the building is completed. The company is called Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. It will bring 70 high paying jobs.

It's been almost two years since the last photo update for this project, and construction is now almost complete. The photos below were taken in July 2011.
