Staying Productive at Work

19 posts in this topic

This should be interesting. What do you do to stay productive and focused at work?

I work for an architecture firm and do a lot of computer drafting. I start my day off with a cup of coffee and listen to Chicago's 103.5 FM Drex in the morning show. It keeps me busy for a few hours. I then listen to 1 hour of regular radio before switching over to my ipod and listen to my favorite songs. I then use the hour before lunch to take care of stuff that requires me to walk around.

After lunch, I have a randomized playlist running on my ipod. If the music is all of my favorites, I'll lose focus. At 3:00, I head for the soda machines for that last boost to get me to the end of the day. The last hour is always the worst.

If I don't have my headphones, the day is slow as hell. I feel like I get more stuff done when music is playing because it gets me into a work rhythm I guess.

I listen to downloaded music or Sirius over WiFi at work. As long as my boss isn't around, the music in the background keeps me moving (I listen to the current dance beats on Sirius 36 mostly.) If my boss is around, staying focused is thrown out the window, he doesn't work effectively at all. He constantly interrupts me with "come here now, do this now, OMG, OMG, OMG! This is a crisis!" Rarely is it though....

Side note, if I wasn't responsible for supervision/training of a new hire right now, I'd telecommute more and his interruptions wouldn't slow my productivity.

I normally listen to Dave FM out of Atlanta or 96 Wave out of Charleston, and then switch to 99X (also Atlanta) at lunch for their 12 o'clock old school punk hour. That normally helps me out. I would listen to cds, but it helps to have music playing that is spontaneous (of course Dave is anything but spontaneous, playing a healthy dose of Sting all day, but I digress).

Listening to DJ Khaled's We Takin' Over (original & remix) keeps me focused. Whenever I start feeling sluggish, hearing that song keeps me alert. I work at NOCVB & my boss is cool with the employees listening to music as long as it doesn't interfere with work responsibilities.

I listen to WPGC 95.5 out of Washington DC or V-103 Atlanta over the internet to help my day go by fast. If I get bored or the either station's internet stream is down then I switch over to my MP3 player. Listening to music and talk always help my day go by faster.

Actually Working!!!!

IPOD's and radios aren't allowed where I work, but I still enjoy what I do. My motivation is that I love my job and since I love it and enjoy it, it keeps me focused on work.

Yeah, I jump onto U/P when I need a quick break. Our internet is tracked, but things seem to be okay so far. After all, this site IS related to the design and planning industries.

With 17,000 or so posts one can conclude that I might have made a few UP posts while at work. :silly:

I am fine in the mornings. It's the afternoon where I slow down. My trick is to take a nap, then drink a double shot latte with soymilk, and optionally eat something with sugar in it. Does wonders as a pick me up.

I can't stand to have complete silence so the first thing launched when I get to work in the mornings is iTunes so it can begin to download the newest episodes of the podcasts I'm subscribed to. I stay on top of news, UP, etc. via NewsGator (RSS reader) via Microsoft Outlook and flip between doing that and checking my five e-mail accounts near constantly all day. I get new RSS updates every 15 minutes and without it I would be out of touch with the world.

After my podcasts have been played through for the day I either listen to music I have via a random playlist in iTunes or fire up my trust Yahoo Music player where I have an unlimited subscription to any music I want. I have it personalized to play geared towards my taste in music and after having rated somewhere around 30,000 songs it pretty much knows what I like and dislike.

I like to do several things at once so in doing the above in the background consistently all day long it helps me stay productive and on top of things. If nothing is happening I shut off. :scared:

Focus? We're supposed to focus? I will throw that up on top of everything else I have to do. In my case, my main focus is usually which person and issue seems to be causing the most trouble for everyone.
