A new 184-acre park in west Montgomery will be completed in December. The park along I-65 will have man-made lakes, three multi-purpose sports fields, four baseball/softball diamonds, a lodge, a pavilion, walking trails and playgrounds for children. Mayor Bobby Bright hopes that the park will lead to more development in west Montgomery.

It looks like this park may lead to some development in west Montgomery. Renovation is planned for a run-down retail center on the southern bypass, next to a street that leads to the park.

^Renovation is planned for a run-down shopping center on the southern bypass, near the new Gateway Park that is under construction. Hopefully this will lead to more badly needed reinvestment along the southern bypass.

The new $13.5 million Gateway Park in the southwest corner of Montgomery has become a popular and safe recreation spot, despite some early concerns that the location would result in safety issues for park users. The first phase, a 9-hole golf course, opened two years ago, a lake and lodge for social gatherings opened last year, and a baseball complex was finished this year. Work is still underway on a picnic pavilion with restrooms and three multipurpose fields.

Kudos to the city for investing in west Montgomery.

Recreational outlet exceeds expectations
