None yet, other than to say it was a preliminary review. They still need to do final review, and then pass the planning commission. Once they're done with that then they have to go before council. This all takes a while so do not plan on September being the absolute drop dead date as far as starting construction. They may be looking more at October.

Appraised at 1.42 mil, sold for 400,000

The city sold land for a planned downtown hotel on Brambleton Avenue for more than $1 million less than the parcel was appraised for a year ago, records show.

LTD Management Co. LLC, the Chesapeake-based hotel management company developing a Residence Inn by Marriott, purchased the .45-acre plot in front of the York Street Parking Garage for $400,000.

The lot was valued at $1.42 million as of Aug. 1, 2006, according to an appraisal done for the city by Commercial First Appraisers LLC of Norfolk. The no-bid deal was announced on June 27. Some city officials have made a point to say that there was no city subsidy for the development, unlike at least two other hotel-related projects in and around downtown Norfolk.

It's kind of annoying that the Pilot is making it out like a big subsidy while at the same time they are actually getting quite a bit for their dumpy building from VB city. Whatever. The parcel is not the most marketable so I think Norfolk did well to get $400K and a hotel rather than letting it sit empty.

Since it's on an island, I really wish they would do more with the sides of the building. Maybe make the elevator/stairs on the side all glass instead of concrete just to make it look more urban. Also, It would have been nice if they designed the hotel to the shape of the land it's being put on, rather than just having a small chunk of grass on the side.

The building will be 107 ft tall which is about 10ft taller than the Belmont at Freemason structures. These projects in tandem will create quite a dense, urban wall effect once all is said and done. It will really help to make that section of downtown look more continuous.
