2 Become 1?

5 posts in this topic

Well, I posted this once before, but some moderator decided to close the thread because I posted the articlle.

The link to the article would not work. Can't you just delete the article and leave it open? Or do you just love the power trip of closing threads? Anyway...here goes.

The cities of Texarkana, AR and Texarkana, TX have always operated 2 of everything.

They each have a police dept, mayor, and everything. Well, they are doing a study and

are considering consolidating the two governments and just having one of everything.

If this is done, it will be very interesting. That will essentially make them one municipality.

I've always wondered if Texarkana would one day become a district, similar to Washington, D.C.

Basically, if the two cities become one, then it will be the only city in the US that lies in two states.

You've now done what you were supposed to do, and this is a great topic. Perhaps it will stay open this time.

Here's a copy-and-paste of the post I made in the closed thread:

Combined population would be 60-70,000. Both sides of Texarkana have over 30,000 residents, split almost equally.

Though there is always the "Texas vs. Arkansas" debates, the Texarkanas are already viewed as just simply "Texarkana," one city in two states. Sure, why not make it official? Then you don't have a poverty-stricken city attached to a prospering city, you have one city and the same focus can be put on both sides. This would definitely make one side pay more attention to the other.

I think it's a great idea, but it's going to take a long time and cost a lot of money to get all the services pulled together. In the end it will definitely be worth it.
