I think there is a hotel under construction at Hwy 30 now.

Hwy 42 is moving at a snails pace, it's seriously pathetic. It's just as sad as the construction on Hwy 73.

AP needs to honestly start taxing themselves to get more infrastructure projects done.   I can't believe it's taken this long to start these projects....much less complete them.

They will never do that. Part of the reason we left was the unwillingness of the area to invest in the community.

I think Louisiana is traumatized over a lot of statewide misuse of taxes because of 40 years of misuse and fraud.  In most parts of the country, even the most conservative districts happily tax themselves for improved transportation infrastructure, public safety, and public education......not so in Louisiana.

I don't believe this is just Louisiana taxpayers being overly principled or those in the rest of the country being more pragmatic.   It's something more obvious, unfortunately.

I think there's a well-justified trust problem in Baton Rouge (state gov), and it will take decades of fiscal transparency to overcome that.  You can't have former governors conducting business in a way that lands them in jail.....and frankly, this new trend of institutions crying wolf on CNN and FoxNews every time the legislature goes into session isn't helping the taxpayers opinion of their state government or the country's opinion of our institutions.

In Gonzales, ground is broken on 356-acre Conway mixed-use development

Gonzales city officials joined real estate developers and brokers in breaking ground today on Conway, a planned $325 million mixed-use lifestyle community believed to be one of the largest in Gonzales, if not Ascension Parish.

“We are expecting over 3,500 people to live in the development once it’s fully constructed,”says Prescott Bailey, Southern Lifestyle Development area president.

He also says 237 lots are under contract with homeowners and builders. Conway is expected to be an 8- to 10-year project, Bailey says. The groundbreaking held this morning ushered in the construction of phase one, which is expected to be complete in mid-2017.

Not only have homeowners and builders started committing to the project, Bailey says two restaurants also are planning to move into Conway. One of the restaurants is a wine bistro called Pour, and the other is an Italian restaurant called Romacelli.

State can't afford to keep up with Ascension Parish growth

What kind of slant is going on here?  Why single out Ascension Parish?  Everyone knows the state can't afford to keep up with growth in any parish.

They'd need another $300 million to be classified as broke.

^My guess is that since Acension is the parish with the highest average income the general thinking is that their needs would be taken care of and people care about them more.

Fair.

And IMO they have a legitimate beef with the state, but so do a lot of other places.   Ascension needs to be open to taxing themselves to hasten some of these improvements.   Ascension is a big parish, and its location between Baton Rouge and New Orleans (with easy access to deep water ports, I-10, US 61, and major manufacturing centers along the river) makes it a very desirable place to live.   I think an argument can be made that their poor development controls and obsolete infrastructure is holding them back from achieving their full potential.

You can tell that most of the parish had a rural grid pattern (somewhat rare in south Louisiana), which means that major relief could be as easy as capacity increases for the major and minor arterial and collector roads.    61, 30, 44, 929, 931, and 621 need to be able to handle more traffic now.....not to mention I-10.

Highway 61 should look like Vets in Kenner - 6 (sometimes 8) lanes with timed, pole mounted signals and a generous, landscaped median.   Airline Hwy is obsolete in so many areas.   That's Ascension's front yard and it's beneficial to the state that it handle more traffic as an alternative to I-10.

Hurry up and wait

Road improvements to La. 42 from U.S. 61 to La. 44 in Prairieville are still listed on the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development website with an anticipated completion date of spring 2017, yet work has stopped prior to the completion of the relocation of utilities. What is the status of this much-needed road work?

Rodney Mallet, a state Department of Transportation and Development spokesman, says, "The project let was moved to the spring to avoid adverse impacts to recovery efforts resulting from the August flood."

Land sold for gated Geismar development

A 129-acre tract of land on La. 73 in Geismar has been sold for $3.2 million to developers who plan to begin construction next month on an upscale gated community.

Corbin Ladner, who is developing Stoney Point along with Jameson Chauvin, said they plan to build a 120-lot development. About 67 homes will be in the first filing of Stoney Point, Ladner said. About 90 percent of the lots are under contract. Homes in the development will start in the upper $400,000 range.

The state should start mandating multiple entrance/exit points.
