Charlotte Photo of the Day

Here is 211 South Church Street in a Google photo of 2011, maybe. It is interesting to see the civil and built structure at the time, 1911 according to the library file from which this old photo comes. The curb was actual curb stones, not concrete. The roof scuppers drain under the unpaved sidewalk and empty into the street gutter. Street is unpaved. This is a junction of the horse era which provided soft surfaces and the motor era which best used hard surfacing. Right at the cusp of a change. Also, auto. was the abbreviation of automobile, still. Bonus to who can identify the manufacturer of these auto.s., or autos., or auto's (that truly does not appear proper with the periods).

Fun fact....Ford's 1908 Model T changed the way Americans drive replacing the "right-hand" steering wheel over to the left. Virtually every car in the United States placed the steering wheel on the right. In fact, Ford only made the change to make it easier for people entering on the passenger side to avoid oncoming traffic.
