Cool stuff used to get built for World’s Fairs  (including Seattle’s Space Needle for 1962).  Knoxville hosted and showed off their Sunsphere in 1982 and New Orleans was the last American City to host in 1984. How cool would it be if Charlotte (a city with a role in the revolution) could bring it back to the states for America’s 250th birthday? Something like “The Vessel” mentioned above could also be built in the form of a giant “Hornet’s nest of rebellion.”

Buzz City rising.  Hmmm wonder what impression uptown will give to the 150,000 visitors versus 1991 All Star Game?  I would guess BOOMTOWN!  

1. Most of these high rises did not exist in 1991.  2. Uptown.  3.  I spy hmmm 6 cranes.  BOOM

Extremely rare KJ photos of uptown at night and during a huge event.  Buzz City was buzzing tonight.  I felt like I was in Miami or NY.  Only light sprinkles and I was working up a sweat walking around in a long sleeve shirt.  It was around 60 degrees.  All Star weekend in Buzz City Charlotte.   KJ will also be sporting a new New Era limited edition All Star Weekend hat at the next UP event. 

I can not tell you how good the buildings looked especially 300 South Tryon and of course DEC and BofA Corp Center.  I sure others may have some photos to share too. 

So if you see some dude coming out of a Tex Mex restaurant or burger joint or a Krispy Kreme sporting this hat that would be me.

Great pics @KJHburg!  But man I sure wish BofA would not turn out the lights on the crown at midnight.  Need to have that thing lit up past midnight for big events like this weekend! Someone please forward this request to BOACC building maintenance for me.

ESPN's broadcast tonight of the "NBA All-Star Celebrity Game" had lots of gorgeous shots of the city, which I have tried to capture here.   Charlotte was very beautifully represented.  I have a couple questions, though.  During the first half of the broadcast, the skyline was blue.  Then during the second half, it was red.  Could these have been live shots?  I assume they were because they were not just pictures as people and vehicles were in motion.  So did the city actually change its skyline color scheme during the middle of the game?  Also, how did Dr. Oz qualify to be a member of the home team?

^Unless it's like a big NFL game or NCAA championship game, they usually shoot this kind of b-roll footage a day or two in advance.  Some may be live, others pre-recorded.   The red/pink you are referring to, was probably shot on Valentine's Day, which was Thursday and all the buildings were lit in pink.  The weather was really nice that day, which made a good day to film some footage.  

I meant to capture some of TNT's representation of the city...they do the best imo and they have these animated graphics of a little hornet buzzing around the skyline and looks like they use some type of CGI during their presentations (usually coming back or going to commercial breaks).  I'll try and get some stills from tonight's game.

Some of the street level shots on Tryon feature what appear to be trees with leaves. So definitely pre-recorded B-roll in those instances.

It was all blue that I saw last night.  It was all red for Valentine's day.   It was beautiful and Charlotte shined last night let me tell you.

When I was looking at that traffic going up College St toward the Epicenter it reminded me of walking over the Strip in Vegas.

TNT had some fantastic angles of Uptown and in my opinion did the best respresenting the City. After the game they had a party at the Music factory with some musicians performing. If Charlotte wasn’t put on the map before, it is now. They made it very well known that it was Charlotte, North Carolina, not Charlottesville or Charleston. By the way there have been numerous celebrity sightings, most of which have been staying at Iveys, The Omni or The Ritz-Carlton.

I'm glad they got footage of the skyline ahead of time. It likely wouldn't show up well in footage tomorrow night. People walking to the All Star Game tomorrow could be getting drenched. 80% chance of rain at 7PM, 1 inch total, heavy at times, and only 45 degrees. The CVS at Epicentre might want to stock up on extra umbrellas!

Although the weather is terrible this weekend, I think that it’s better to host the All Star Game now than it would have been earlier with all the new buildings that have gone up.

Hopefully, Duke’s new HQ  will have largely risen once the GOP convention occurs.

I was looking at some NBA All Star clips on youtube and the following promo ad came up. It's a good year for Southern Cities hosting prominent national events.. SuperBowl (Atlanta), NBA All Star Wkd ( Charlotte) and the NFL Draft ( Nashville).  I wish I could have attended all three.
