True, though they do have to compete with three ACC collegiate teams in the Triangle. New owner Tom Dundon might be more open to the idea of moving the team to Charlotte, but Raleigh is a growing city itself and I guess it doesn’t hurt to let them have the NHL team if we have NBA, NFL, and potentially MLS and MLB in the future!

I think if Dundon were to move it it would be Houston. Supposedly he has dangled "Oh well so and so would do this for me in Houston" over Raleigh and NC officials a couple times already in his short tenure.

You might be right.  I know some people, including Hall of Fame and former Panthers GM Bill Polian were not thrilled with him taking over the AAF (Alliance of American Football) and then shutting it down before it even finished a full season.  Many thought it had the potential to basically become the minor league for the NFL if given a chance.

Damn, was this picture photographed with a potato?  It's like -5 megapixel lol.

Pretty sure I’ve used that lightning png in a design before. I call poor photoshop from a fake news site.

Charlotte was never in contention for the Canes because CLT didn’t have have an arena. The Canes piggybacked on the building of the state of art “Entertainment and Sports Arena” at the time as a partnership with NC State.

Also, just because a team is named “Carolina” doesn’t mean it includes South Carolina. Sure, that’s the case for the Panthers based in CLT, but not so for the Canes nowhere near SC.  In fact, look closely between the flags in the logo and you’ll see the state of North Carolina.

I realize that, but by 1997 George Shinn was already discontent with the decade old Charlotte Coliseum and the Canes could have been a partner with the Hornets for the new Uptown arena, but I also realize that would have required them either staying in Hartford temporarily or agreeing to play a few years in the Tyvola Charlotte Coliseum until a new arena could be built. I understand that the  “Carolina” moniker could apply to North Carolina and/or South Carolina, as it is used by both the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, but they limit their fan base by excluding South Carolina. Their alternate logo with the space between the flags representing NC does look cool, but their primary logo has no state imagery unit.

Original Panthers logo is said to depict NC-SC borders:

If I squint I can see it.

The Panthers had the right idea from the start and have built a solid fan base across the Carolinas. Charlotte was the perfect centralized location  for the team. The logo does represent the states of NC and SC when turned upside down. It might have been more obvious in the original logo, but is still visible in the new logo which is really just a modernization of the old logo. The special logo for the 25th season has been popping up lately and features both states.

Upside down? I see Nc and SC way more when it’s just turned gently clockwise. Maybe 15-20 degrees.

Okay, so maybe not exactly upside down, but the head was supposed to represent SC and the body was supposed to represent NC.  A general, not perfect representation.

CLT has had a Hockey team since 1956. The Clippers move to CLT from Baltimore after the BAL Arena burned down.

This was the catalyst for Hockey in the South.  CLT had an Arena for the Hurricanes,  the now Bojangles Coliseum, but already

had a NFL and NBA team, as well as a Triple A Baseball Team and the CLT Motor Speedway.  Hockey was a distant 4th  back then and still is.

According to Sportsshow.net   the most watched were :

NFL

MLB

NBA

NHL

Soccer

Tennis

Golf

WWE

Motor Sports

Badminton

And I suspect that CLT and David Tepper will be the 30th MLS Soccer Team. They like Billionaires with Stadiums...not dudes that need help with money

and have to wait 2 years for a stadium to be built...

@Walt,

I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the suggestion that the now Bojangles’ Coliseum would be suitable for an NHL franchise. It’s fine for AHL, but would not work for the NHL. Sharing an arena with the NBA (as the Checkers did for a while until Bojangles’ Coliseum was renovated) would be the only option for an NHL Franchise.  Hockey is 4th or 5th on my list of sports as well, along with soccer, though the popularity of soccer is growing in the United States and my interest would grow as well if we got a MLS team.  If the Hurricanes had chosen Charlotte over Raleigh then the AHL team would have relocated, probably to Raleigh.  In the same way, if Charlotte ever gets a MLB franchise then the AAA team will relocate somewhere else.

I honestly don’t think it fits all that much in a state map either way. I think it is a very loose representation of the Carolinas, and has to be in order for it to still look like a Panther, which is the point. The information I passed along about the upside down logo came from a college class I took a long time ago, but it doesn’t matter that much to me. I like the logo looking like a Panther whether it looks like a map when you flip it or not, lol.

BEHOLD, The Carolina Panther roars from atop the Blue Ridge Mountains!
