Charlotte Photo of the Day

This is great! This was my first year in Charlotte. Walton Building in lower left with no parking extending to McDowell, as is now. Second Ward High School facing across Stonewall, soon to be or perhaps under demolition at this time. Marshall Park is dirt and scrub. The location of trees in lower left gives truth to the neighborhood of Brooklyn which had recently been demolished. Convention Center at Stonewall and Brevard. It is easy to see here how streets leading east from Tryon had been lowered under the tracks in the decades prior to this photo. Until autos predominated all streets crossed on grade. On Stonewall and the rail overpass the asphalt expanse is from two large new car dealers. Young Ford , and across Caldwell was another, name unremembered, which later was Arnold Palmer Cadillac.

One could go downtown to buy a new car then. Young Ford and the cross Caldwell dealer. Frank Woods Pontiac on South Tryon a block toward the square from Observer. LaPointe Chevrolet on East Trade across from City Hall (or maybe a block further in). A new Datsun place in a building at S Tryon and Morehead. Business Journal location today. That dealer was so small they parked cars on the roof of the two story building that were not in showroom. I told a story about that business on this site few years ago.
