Charlotte Photo of the Day

This is from the storm earlier this evening that produced one hell of a light show. I cant really tell if this actually hit the Carilon building or just behind it. I think it struck behind, but not really sure.

I would say it was behind the building. You can see the spidering of the lightning coming out from behind the building and if it had hit the building, you would probably see some sort of explosion/damage occuring along with smoke caused by the intense heat.

Spidering can happen in all different directions at once. I have seen lightning strikes a couple of miles away but some those spiders were directly above me. Lightning is something that is still a mystery in metereology. I have read accounts of people being struck without a scratch while others are instantly killed. Kind of like a tornado destroying a neighbors house while yours was not scathed.

I myself had a streamer come from the top of my head in 2005. Stupid me was on the roof of a 7-story apartment building in Richmond as a storm was approaching. Thank God the streamer and charges from above did not connect.

Would I do it again? sure... I love chasing down storms :P

None the less good catch. It is very difficult to take photos of lightning. You should enter that photo into a competition. If not, you should get some good bucks selling it.

I'm bracing myself for when Mobuchu comes and makes a mockery of my photos, but let me warm you up with some skyline views from around Charlotte School of Law and Conformity's tour of Southborough.

Someone's going to say it so I'll just say it now... HIDE THE POWERLINES! I'll edit it out one day, nonetheless the view is breathtaking.

Pink buildings happen when the city makes the developer upset...

What did the City do to upset the developer?

In those lines, thank God the City did not upset Wachovia. Could you image the 48-story Wachovia Tower with a pink curtainwall?

I don't know what you are talking about the pink building making the skyline subpar, thats ridiculous. The color variety is great, and the building looks fantastic at sunset/sunrise.

Pink buildings happen when the city makes the developer upset...

Seriously? That is a re-write of history. Poor Mr. Gross wasn't upset by the city, and if he was he only hurt himself with his reactions. When the pink glass went up buyers dropped like flies and there are still quite a few units that have never been sold. They only release a few at a time so no one knows just how many. Mr. Gross also had a very fortunate fire that destroyed the Park Elevator building, an historic designated property on the property that was holding up his project getting started. Now, I like The Pink Building, but the developer spited himself and screwed himself with it -- at the time he was a pretty prominent and vocal development leader in Charlotte -- since he has been quite quite, his ego received a much needed deflation.

He also trampled all over Factory South owners during construction (one incident he refused to pay to repair their cars when his careless stucco installers basically sprayed their parking lot).

Now, back to the topic, Southborough looks fantastic. Can't wait to see the whole South Blvd corridor filled with projects like this.
