Charlotte Photo of the Day

This home in Charlotte was built in 1774 and has stood ever since then.  You can tour this house at the Charlotte History Museum in east Charlotte off Shamrock.  This was quite the nice house for the day 4 bedrooms, all stone,  large foyer.   The separate kitchen building is still standing as is the spring house on the creek.  yes Charlotte was around in the 1700s and became a city in 1768 before the Independence War broke out.
here is some history about it
https://charlottemuseum.org/about/1774-alexander-homesite/
Most of the homes in this area at that time were log cabin type homes so this was one of the finest homes in this entire region.
Happy Independence Day!   If you have never toured do so and step back in time right here in Mecklenburg County.   Be sure to visit the Colonial herb garden and see what they grow and still grow there today.

I remember my Elementary school (I think?) taking us there on a field trip. It was interesting to see.

Typically during weather cancelations (like last night), I find most passengers gravitate towards the cheapest "decent" hotel possible as they are responsible for the cost of accommodations. Light rail definitely would have helped some passengers get to Uptown that are willing to spend $150+ per night, but I suspect most would have still gravitated towards the more affordable "airport" hotels clustered nearby off Little Rock Road, Billy Graham Parkway, Woodlawn, et... that range from $65 - $110 a night (Hyatt Place, Hilton Garden Inn, the Doubletree Airport, Aloft Airport, et...).  People become VERY price conscious when absorbing unplanned travel costs and they often just have 6 - 8 hours at the airport hotel before needing to return for their rebooked flight in the morning. The majority of our airport hotels aren't off the future light rail route and while I think we'll get some new hotels right off a Wilkinson light rail route, there will always be a lot of stranded passengers that will wait for a ride to these cheaper hotels in the non-transit friendly Billy Graham corridor.

South End of SouthEnd, going forward to be affectionately known as, to my illustrious fellow UPer"s, as "Bikini  Boomtown" lol

Best marketing campaign thus far! And to think people once questioned who would be leasing all these new places uptown. They've got this lol

I guess the crowd from that Crown building that someone posted recently won’t be coming here.  (I never even knew what “crown” referred to until I saw the posts here and then looked it up on Urban Dictionary.)

Young KJ took this in the spring of 1989 before some of you were alive!

Notice anything missing??  Lots and only Johnny Harris and I like those pyramids on the Civic Center and he resurrected one for his BOAT at Legacy.    From the KJ vault opened today.

Charlotte was 447,000 people in the city limits or about the size of Raleigh today.

And the new downtown shopping excursion, CityFair had just opened a few months prior,,,can not see it in this picture, but would be towards the right side were the current Truist Tower sets!

Yep!!  I’ve mentioned this in prior posts, but I worked for NationsBank in the mid-90s and we were on the third floor of CF, which was basically Fat Tuesday and a food court at the bottom by that time.  They rushed us into 525 N Tryon before it was even 100% completed so they could implode CF to make way for Hearst.  Good times…

I remember The Charlotte Observer brought in some urban planner from the West coast to write a commentary our our fair city about this time.  His chief comment was, "Might as well be Oskosh".
