Received a behind the scene tour of Light the Knights last evening, Opens Wednesday the 23rd,  (before Thanksgiving), and runs through Christmas, New Year's, and into the first week of January, (the 6th.) In addition to a large Christmas light walk through (with multiple memory and family selfie stations) along the main concourse, there's a regulation hockey rink, with competitive hockey games sched as well as open skating, snow tubing hills (15lanes), of course Santa will be there. I took many more pics but don't want to ruin it for everyone. 

It's a must see!!!

Government gas subsidies, pro auto zoning and parking ordinances, along with modern transportation planning succeeded in eviscerating the downtowns of America's cities as thoroughly as the Allies carpet bombing campaigns did to the centers of downtown Dresden, Berlin, etc...etc., during WWII.  

We often use comparison maps showing the downtowns of US cities before the Federal Highway Act of 1956 and the results unleashed by it a generation later.   They are stark.   Pre War maps of the same area of Charlotte would show a rich fabric of buildings (in black), as opposed to large swaths of parking and highway ROW's by the late 1970's early 1980's (shown in white).  Same are true for pre and post War Detroit, Cleveland, etc, etc.

Viewed side by side with maps of European cities pre and post war and tears will well up in your eyes.   And, unlike the War in Europe, we visited this devastation upon our cities voluntarily, even reallocating large amounts of National wealth for it....something we continue doing to this very day.

The most stark contrast is when you look at the center city of both locations and see that Charlotte has a lot more surface parking as oppose to Nashville.

I just drove by Nashville and it also seemed denser than Charlotte (I was blown away by the amount of cranes I saw in downtown!). Haha pardon the photo as I took it while still on the freeway (don’t worry, I was a passenger!!!)

I could be wrong, but I think Nashville changed a rule on skyscrapers. This resulted in a tsunami of towers being built there. Charlotte has some catching up to do!

I hate to say this but I'd love to think most of us don't give a rats tail about Nashville or any other city while on this forum. When will Charlotte just be Charlotte, and stop aspiring to be other cities?

Super cool feature - I’m jealous though, wish CLT had a River like Nashville!!  We only have this sucky Lightrail thing.  Trade ya….lol

Absolutely - this is why I’m rooting for more towers being constructed in SouthEnd, Dilworth & Midtown.  Towers surrounding Uptown will absolutely have the effect of making Charlotte’s Core feel more substantial.  We’ve got height on Nashville but they just have more… bc NC has another Major Metropolitan (RDU) area sucking up just as much growth as Charlotte,  Tennessee has only 1 …

I don't think we should make it a "competition" because that's silly. However it can be useful to look at peer and non-peer cities to learn lessons, both good and bad, and use them to inform the planning of Charlotte's future.

How dare you ignore the glorious Bass Pro Pyramid which Memphis kept out of Nashville

I would argue that if you don't maintain an arbitrary centering of Charlotte's downtown on Trade & Tryon and instead center it more to the south--to include South End in uptown--Charlotte's center city isn't all *that* much less dense than Nashville's.
