I wish UNC Charlotte wasn’t so far from uptown and had it been more like NCState or Duke right next to their downtown. I get a lot of “Charlotte isn’t really walkable or bikable.” A lot because it’s located so far from the core which tends to be more dense and walkable. Most impressively would have had the skyline in the background and the views and that would be insanely cool! It’s a shame it’s so far out!

Agreed. Students really do a lot to make a city core more lively. I was very impressed with cities like Pittsburgh for how neighborhoods even just outside of downtown were buzzing with activity at all times, and I think it is mostly student-driven. Hopefully the Wake Forest med school will add a little of that to Charlotte, and maybe more to come in the future.

It should be noted that what eventually became UNC Charlotte was originally where CPCC is located. It wasn't until the 60s that the institution became an official university, and went north due to both generous land for growth, and a foresight that there would be explosive growth in that area. It's a shame University City wasn't better planned in that time. UNC Charlotte is a post-war university, which looked to expansive, suburban campuses. Look at SUNY Stony Brook, USF, UCF, UC Irvine, UCSD, and UC Riverside and you'll see similar campuses that are horribly assimilated into their cities.

It is absolutely nutso to think that with the exception of the old Duke bunker, the buildings way down N Tryon, 2WF, and the soon-to-be-gone Enterprise building, that nothing in this photo existed prior to about 2007.  That’s crazy to me.

Some photos of Charlotte I took today. I’m flying out in the evening sadly but I had a wonderful time here in downtown and lake Norman this past long weekend. I also went to Winston Salem. I have family in Charlotte now so I visit every year.
