People talking about Grand Rapids

New York Times Magazine this Sunday had an article about why charity fails when it doesn't act like business.

The majority of the article isn't GR-related at all, but they do mention GR twice. This first mention is pretty cool because it doesn't have "...unlikeliest of places..." or "...crumbling midwest..." attached to GR or the meeting occurring there.

Steelcase is going to buy 100% of the Renewable Energy Credits from a wind farm to be built in Texas. (Yes, in Texas). Too bad we don't have any windfarms in West Michigan yet.

And Bissell is going Green (didn't know whether this should go in Green Rapids or not)

Michigan has untold treasures for writers, says Flint Journal columnist David Graham

snips:

In June 2009, at least 800 members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America are expected to visit Grand Rapids for the annual OWAA conference

and

OWAA officials say that convention organizers in previous host cities estimate they received several million dollars worth of free publicity in the year after OWAA came to their cities. For years afterward, there usually is a parade of magazine articles about host cities and their surrounding areas, worth upward of $52 million, officials claim.

A new gangster movie called "The Fifth" starring Joe Mantegna of the TV show "Criminal Minds", will begin filming in Grand Rapids this Summer. They will be scouting out both rural and urban sites for the filming. The combination of West Michigan's "topography" and the new film industry tax credits were the deciding factors.

Watched that show "New Amsterdam" last night and one of the main women characters (apparently from his flashbacks) said a couple of times that she was from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Not sure that this is exposure on the level of other things in this thread, but how often do you hear GR referenced prominently in a TV show?!

I was going to post about this today, but have been quite busy @ work. I had to rewind my DVR to make sure she actually said Grand Rapids. I don't think she was a main character - just a 1 time flashback character. I have dug this show since it came out. A nice twist for a crime drama.

A new romantic comedy starring Hilary Duff is going to be shot in West Michigan, according to the Press today. Not a big production, but it's being made by TicTock Studios out of Holland.

Detroit Tigers star centerfielder Curtis Granderson will be doing a rehabilitation stint with the Whitecaps tonight. He writes a blog for ESPN.com and in today's entry he writes about his rehab, including his upcoming visit to Grand Rapids. Some nice press for not only the Whitecaps but also the fans in this area.

5/3 Park should be jam packed tonight too.

CNN has a story today with the 10 Fastest Growing Real Estate Markets. Link

It lists GR as #8. If that's the case, the rest of the nation must be really screwed if we're in the top 10.

I dunno...I think there are pockets of GR that are doing fine; it seems to be hit-or-miss, yet those "hits" are pulling GR ahead of a lot of other markets. We refinanced last month and were appraised 2.6% higher than what we paid for the house a year ago.

Regardless, it sure is nice to see Grand Rapids popping up on more positive lists like this!

Ughhh...this isn't exactly the kinda press I thought we'd get after last night. And I don't know what he's smokin' either.....GR is NOT the epicenter of the imploding economy...we may be caught on the edges, but... And where the heck did he find 80-90% abandon homes as he seems to imply?

I'd be more concerned about the comments of "Geoff" then the foreclosure stats., and I didn't see anything about a 80-90% abandon rate in GR, only on Broadway Ave. (which probably IS correct.)
