Hey, what's that (and other miscellanea)?

OK, here's one. What is this new development in front of Family Fare on Leonard near Fuller? Starbucks?

And even a better question, what is this? It appears to be part of the development, but almost looks like a fancy bus stop or gazebo. I kinda like it.

Starbucks backed out, Jimmy John's is going to be the tenant. The "thing" is called a pergola (sp?) according to what I've been told. Supposedly the PC required it to be "ped friendly". :dontknow:

On bidclerk, there's a listing for a mixed-use development which will begin construction in Oct. 08, and includes the renovation of and addition to a two-story building into 14 condominium units and 20,000 square feet of office space. Anyone know what project this is? I'm drawing a blank.

The map for the project on that website makes me think it has to do with Davenports' old downtown campus.

Seems to me there's a sixties era two story apartment building on the south side of Fulton, across from Davenport, with new Condo's For Sale signs. It's set back from Fulton so an addition would be possible.

Could be Davenport, but I don't know how accurate that mapping feature is on there. I think it just drops a pin at the center of the zip code. :dontknow:

20,000 square feet of office AND 16 condos is what is throwing me off. 16 condos at an average of 1000 sf each would be a building of about 36,000 square feet total.

edit: I just remembered this project, which might be it:

Are they really going to start in October? It'd be great if they did.

Maybe this is mentioned elsewhere on the forum, but what's going on here? New development? I took this photo this morning.

I sincerely doubt anyone has ponied up the cash that Azzar wants for this building. Last time I was through that building I noticed that there was still a 5 or 6' deep areaway that projects out from the front of the building under the sidewalk. Judging by the condition of the sidewalk, I would wager that they city is going to be filling in that areaway.

The hostage holding of that building is a crime against the citizens of Grand Rapids.

I find it surprising that Azzar would even put up the cash to erect a fence. I'm surprised that he wouldn't just wait for the areaway to collapse and then sue the city for their negligence (and with Azzar's history, he'd probably win somehow). ;)

Joe

Sounds like everyone was correct about this building

Anyone seen the smartforTwos running around downtown? I think I've seen at least three of them, which is interesting, since the closest dealerships are in Bloomfield Hills and Lincolnwood, IL.

Also, that house with the giant columns on Lyon across from Central High is looking pretty good.

One last thing I'd been contemplating posting in this topic. Does anyone know more of the history of the large house/mansion on Eastern just north of Wealthy on the east side of the road. I think it belongs to a mental health organization of some sort now.

Currently offices of Project Rehab's parent corporation. Built as a single family home, it was a private school for a while I think in the 20s & 30s, then a Funeral Home for a very long time. Triple G has an old press ad/photo from the school days, before the central tower was removed. Now protected by the Fairmount Square Historic District.

This isn't a building, but it's certainly interesting.

I happened upon this pedestrian bridge across a creek on the NW side.

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&...1&encType=1

(Here's the google map, for those that don't play well with Microsoft Live maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...mp;t=h&z=18)

I just wonder what the history behind this is. Obviously, it's a needed connection. But was it built so people in that residential neighborhood to the south could walk to work in the industrial areas to the north?

My Halloween PedalGR cemetery tour ( http://www.pedalgr.com ) will be going over this bridge. That's how I found it.

This was the location of Broadway Ave over the creek. Turner went under the RR and was subject to flooding. The MDOT RR Safety section and the RR agreed to a grade crossing at Turner if the grade crossing just north of the bridge was removed. The highway bridge was replaced with the ped bridge you see today. Go east of Turner on the same creek and you will see a very old concrete ped bridge I've never been able to find any history on.

I was hoping to go to this, but now I cannot because apparently somebody else thinks they have better use for my own bike than I do. <<

Unless somebody's got a bike for sale that's priced very low.

Doh! That sucks a lot. How tall are you? I'll keep an eye on craigslist for ya. Try the Motion Initiative as well. You can walk there from Rapid Central in 10 or 15 minutes. I believe they are still having open shop hours on Monday and Tuesday nights, sometimes Thursdays.

Tony rides about a 23" frame. He's a bit taller than yours truly.
