Richmond CenterStage has added a show to this season's Broadway series.

SPAMALOT will play 3 performances at The Carpenter Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 11th, 12th and 13th, 2013.

NOTE: It's not altogether clear in the link but SPAMALOT is booked into downtown's Carpenter Theatre rather than The Landmark where all the other 5 shows will perform.

Tickets go on sale Friday, November 9th.

Today's RVANews picture of the day is downtown's Carpenter Theatre which is the 1800-seat venue in Richmond CenterStage. Just beyond the theatre is part of the former Thalhimer's Department Store which houses Rhythm Hall, The Gottwald Playhouse, an art gallery and educational facilities

The entire complex fronts East Grace between 6th and 7th Streets.

PS: The Landmark Theatre, about 15 blocks west, is also managed by Richmond CenterStage. The 3600-seat hall on Monroe Park at West Main and Laurel Streets in midtown is undergoing the first phase of a $50M renovation. It will reopen this month with a concert and continue offering musicals, forums and other entertainment until spring when the second phase of reconstruction begins.

A Fortune 500 company has purchased naming rights. Grand re-opening in early fall of 2013 will feature a new marquee identifying the building as THE ALTRIA THEATRE.

Virginia Opera is based in Norfolk but has a large presence in Richmond. It performs in The Harrison Opera House in its home city and takes its productions on the road to Richmond and Fairfax.

Next up is DIE FLEDERMAUS by Johann Strauss II, and in a departure from Virginia Opera's normal 2-performance stand at The Carpenter Theatre,it will have a three-day run on Friday, Sunday and Tuesday, November 23, 25 and 27.

The company's final production in May is the Rogers & Hammerstein musical CAROUSEL. According to the web site it will be performed 8 times, but only in Norfolk.

That strikes me as odd. Usually, the Carpenter Theatre lies dormant from late spring until September. IMO, a popular musical such as CAROUSEL could fill the house for a couple of weeks.

Lyric Opera Virginia, based in Hampton Roads, has ceased producing opera and will focus on master classes and discovery concerts that showcase children.

Virginia Opera will absorb two productions which had been pre-sold to subscribers of LOV and will present them in pre-arranged venues.

Thus, LOV's production of CAMELOT will be performed in Richmond as previously announced for one show at The Landmark Theatre in Richmond on Sunday, January 20th at 2:30PM.

Check the release below for more details:

The highly touted National Company of LES MISERABLES will open a week's run at The Landmark Theatre on Tuesday, March 26th.

The new film version of the musical, starring Hugh Jackman, is scheduled to open in January, and that will probably enhance ticket sales for the live version.

LES MIZ has played the Landmark twice in previous years to full houses.
