How walkable is your neigborhood?

Recommended Posts

Instead of just grousing about it, I wrote a note to the folks in charge and got this response (edited slightly):

"Thanks for the note!

Wow, those are some strange grocery store results! The strangest I've seen!

I'll have to look into that.

Can you send your address, or a nearby intersection so I can recreate the

results you saw?

Thanks a bunch! We'll use your area as a test case as we develop future

improvements.

FYI, We get all our data from Google, and now that people all over are using

this we're seeing a lot more variation in the kinds of results we get from

the current ways we ask for things from Google. Your feedback is very

helpful :) "

That's it. It's encouraging that they want to get it right.

They're missing the boat on walkability as previously described.

I'm 3 blocks from gaslight village and my score is a 49.

That's hard to believe as I consider my neighborhood about as walkable as they come (we almost never drive unless we're leaving town or going to work).

Another reason to live in the city...

Heavy? Your neighborhood may be to blame

Those built before 1950 help keep you skinnier by encouraging walking

A quote:

"The older neighborhoods also tend to have a variety of stores and businesses located within walking distance, so people wind up traveling by foot to do errands, go to local restaurants or other activities, Smith added.

Modern neighborhoods, on the other hand, generally consist of large areas with nothing but housing, an arrangement that hinders walking and forces people to drive more to get around. "

Walk. Walk. Walk. I'm all about it. Bus it too. And bike it. Now that I've moved back to GR after 25 years in bigger cities, I will walk as much as I can. I'm used to it. I've lived in Chicago and San Francisco. You walk there. And as downtown fills in I'll have more to walk to! Bring it on!
